Filming . The film was based on the book of the same name by the American writer Mary Elizabeth Mapes Dodge, published in 1865. The film was shot from the end of January to May 2019 in St. Petersburg and the Leningrad Region-Kronstadt, Gatchina and Vsevolozhsk. The Peter and Paul Fortress, the Mikhailovsky Castle, the Vitebsk Railway Station, the Museum of Applied Arts, and the Great Gatchina Palace appear in the frame. Interior scenes were shot in the palaces: Yusupov, Marble, Sheremetyevo, as well as in the palace of Grand Duke Vladimir Alexandrovich. Only a part of the episodes were filmed on the natural ice of the Neva, Fontanka, Moika and Kryukov Canal. No luck with the weather: the winter was warm

The plot of the film. The film takes place at the end of 1899 in St. Petersburg, where there are absolutely different, seemingly unrelated people: the son of an ordinary lamplighter, Matvey, who has silver-plated skates, and the daughter of a dignitary named Alice, who is fond of the world of science. Matvey lost his job as a courier in a candy store and got involved with a gang of pickpockets who are fond of Marx's ideas about expropriation. The officer of the Security Department, Captain Prince Arkady Trubetskoy, is fighting crime in St. Petersburg and wants to marry Alice. The interests of all the characters inexorably intersect...[7] Trubetskoy wants to marry Alice because of greed, because it will probably lead to his promotion. The heart of the girl belongs to Matvey, who is forced to engage in dishonest work to save his seriously ill father, but a pure-hearted young man. At the insistence of her father, Alice is forced to get engaged to Trubetskoy, but at any moment she is ready to run away to Paris with Matvey.
