I. Учитель: Good afternoon, boys and girls.

Our today’s lesson will be devoted to traditions. Traditions are very important in the life of people. They tell us about our past, they show us who we are, where we belong. They make our life more interesting and beautiful.

What kind of traditions can there be? (Suggested answers: national, family, sport, school, language, religious, cultural, musical etc).

What do they show us? (Suggested answers: They show us what country we live in, what school we go to, what language we speak, etc.)

So it is very important to keep traditions, to observe them. Now tell me, please, can we call national holidays tradition? What do national holidays show us? (Suggested answers: They show us what country we live in, its history, what people are like, what they like doing, etc.)/

At our lessons we’ve read and spoken about some British, American and Russian traditions and festivals. Let’s revise them. But you should keep in mind that holidays are celebrated and traditions are observed.

On the blackboard you can see the names of some holidays and traditions. Say where this or that holiday /tradition is celebrated /observed. Christmas, New Year, Kwanzaa, Thanksgiving Day, Pancake Day, Groundhog Day, Easter, Victory Day, St. David’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day и ключевые выражения “is celebrated”, “is observed”). Easter is celebrated all over the world. Kwanzaa is observed in the USA by Afro-American people.

Now, look around. Isn’t there a lot of green colour in the classroom? Why? They say on this day everything becomes green and everyone becomes a bit Irish. Why? What day is it? (Suggested answers: It is St. Patrick’s Day. It is the national holiday of Ireland and Ireland is called the “Emerald Island”).

So today we’ll learn about the national tradition of the Irish people – St. Patrick’s Day.

We’ll make a trip to the Emerald Ireland but to get there we must have a passport which will contain the most important information about Ireland. Учащиеся составляют «паспорт», используя слова (2) на доске, выбирая те, которые относятся к Ирландии: St. George, St. David, St. Andrew, St. Patrick, English, Scottish, Irish, Welsh, a thistle, a red rose, a shamrock, a daffodil, a bagpipe, a fiddle, a harp, a guitar, cricket, golf, hurling, rugby, waltz, polka, a jig.

-The name of the country is Ireland. The patron saint is St. Patrick. The national emblem is a shamrock.

-The national musical instrument is a harp. The national sport is hurling. The national dance is a jig.

We should also have something green to get to Ireland. I have a green blouse. I’ve got a green shirt, I’ve got a green tie, etc.)

To make a good start, let’s recite a poem.

St. Patrick’s Day is here, you see

We’ll pick some shamrocks, one, two and three.

We’ll count the leaves and look them over

And maybe find a four-leaf clover.

I’ll sew green buttons on my vest

Green for St. Patrick is the best

I’ll wear a green hat very high

And dance a jig, at least I’ll try.

This shamrock will be our passрort and guide to the Emerald Island. It will tell us what we should do. What does it tell us to do first? 1 – Tell the class what you know about Ireland.

1. There are different Irelands. One Ireland is a country with beautiful high mountains, big empty beaches, long, deep rivers. People go there to fish and swim and walk. They love Ireland because it is so quiet, and because the Irish people are so nice and friendly. Another Ireland is a country of stories and music. Most Irish people can sing and many famous musicians are Irish. A lot of the most famous writers in the English language are Irish, too. But Ireland is also a country of blood, bombs and death. Between 1968 and 1998 thousands of people in Northern Ireland died.

2. Ireland is an island like a plate: it is higher on the outside than in the centre. The centre of Ireland is full of beautiful lakes and rivers, and many people go there to fish and sail. Ireland’s largest lake is Lough Neagh, its longest river, the Shannon, is 260 kilometres long. Most of Ireland’s mountains are near the sea, they are not very high, but they are very beautiful. At the cliffs of Moher, in the west, you can look 200 metres straight into the sea.

3. The Giant’s Causeway, in the north, is made of strange rocks two metres tall with six sides. There are hundreds of small islands in the sea around Ireland. On the Aran Islands, in the west, most people speak Irish, not English. Life has changed very little here in a hundred years.

4. The centre and east of Ireland are very different. The land is very good here, the Irish milk and meat are some of the best in the world. Farming is the one of the most important jobs in Ireland. Thousands of horses live here, too. Some of the best horses in the world come from Ireland and are sold to Britain, America, Australia and Japan. People go to watch horse races in many Irish towns.

5. The Irish are a Celtic people. Thousands of years ago the Celts came to Ireland from western France and northern Spain. They loved singing, and horses, and stories, and they made beautiful gold and silver jewellery. Many men wore gold rings round their necks and arms. They were very good fighters. Before they fought they hit their long swords on their shields, and shouted with loud voices.

Comprehension. Questions and answers.

-What’s the surface of Ireland like? What’s the largest lake? What’s the longest river? What’s the name of strange rocks in the north? Where did the Celts come from? What wеre the Celts like?

Do you know any Celtic legends?

Finn Mac Cool was a famous Celtic fighter. When he was a boy, he cooked a fish on a fire. This fish knew everything about the world. Finn touched the hot fish with his finger, and put his finger in his mouth. Then he knew everything about the world, too. “I know what is going to happen tomorrow,” he said.

Now we see that you know some facts about Ireland and its history. What does the shamrock tell us to do next? Listen to a story about St. Patrick.

Pre-listening task: revision of vocabulary (translation from Russian into English): ирландцы, продавать, овцы, бог, монахи, монастырь .

Аудирование. Текст “St. Patrick, the Church, and the Vikings”( by Tim Vicary на аудиодиске к книге “Ireland” из серии Factfiles, Oxford Bookworms Library).

In 401 some Irishmen came to Britain. They took many people back to Ireland and sold them. One of these people was Patrick, who was only sixteen. For six years young Patrick worked with sheep on a farm. Then when he was twenty-two, he ran away to France. He learned about God from monks at a school in a French monastery. In 432 he went back to Ireland to teach the Irish about God. The Irish kings listened to him and he built an important church in Armagh. A hundred years later Ireland was one of the most important Christian countries in Europe, with beautiful churches and monasteries everywhere. Irish writers wrote famous, important books like the Book of Kells, which you can see in Dublin today, and there are pictures of St. Patrick in many Irish churches.

After-listening tasks:

1.Finish my sentences using the information from the text about St. Patrick:

The Irishmen came to Britain in ... Patrick lived in ... The Irishmen took Patrick to ... He was ... years old then. When he was 22 he ... He learned about God in France from ... He went back to Ireland to ... in ... He built ... A hundred years after Ireland was ... .

2.Choose the correct word

- Most Irish people can ski/sing. – Most of Ireland’s mountains/lakes are near the sea. –The Giant’s Causeway is made of strange islands/rocks. – Life on the Aran Islands changes quickly/slowly. In the north and west of Ireland it is warm and wet/dry and hot. Irish wine/milk and meat are some of the best in the world. Irish people sell dogs/horses to many countries. Many Celtic people wore gold rings around their necks and arms/feet and legs. Hurling is a popular Celtic game/dance. Irish is very like/different from English.

Now we see that you know some facts about Ireland, its present and past. People hand the legends of the past from generation to generation. They tell them to their children and grandchildren. People also sing songs telling us stories of the past. Look at this picture.

Near Trinity College in Dublin one can see the statue of a very famous girl. Can you guess her name? – Molly Malone. What do you know about her? (Suggested answer: People say that she was a beautiful girl, who sold fish called cockles and mussels on the streets to make a living.)

What does the shamrock tell us to do now? Read the texts and show how St. Patrick Day is celebrated nowadays.

St. Patrick Day has become the Day of Ireland and is celebrated in different countries and cities of the world, even in Moscow “Green” parades are held on the 17 of March.

I’d like all of you to divide into 3 groups. Each group will have a task – to read the text and tells and show what people do on St. Patrick’s Day.

Texts for performing. Texts can be acted out or dramatised or mimed.

A. St. Patrick’s Day is a national Irish holiday. There are parades everywhere in Ireland. There are parades in the USA. Many people in the USA have their Irish grandfathers and great-grandfathers. There are parades in other countries and even in Russia, in Moscow. But the biggest parade is in New York City. More than 150 000 people march in this parade. People wear green shirts, hair ribbons and hats.

B. Children and adults wear something green. And shops prepare green food, green bread, green pasta, green ice-cream, green milkshakes. People eat corned beef, and cabbage and drink Irish coffee. Irish songs can be heard on the radio.

C. St. Patrick Day is fun to celebrate by playing party games.

Think of green. One player thinks of something that is green (grass, shamrock, tea, cucmber, beans, trees...). He says: “I’m thinking of something green.” The other players have 10 chances to guess the green object. They say:”My guess is ... .

So we have done the Shamrock’s tasks. By the way, you know a shamrock has 3 leaves. What does it symbolise? ( Suggested answer: Trinity). But the Irish say if you come across a 4-leaf clover, another name for shamrock, it will bring you lots of luck.

I’m looking over a four-leaf clover

That I overlooked before

One leaf is sunshine,

The second is rain,

Third is the rose that grows on the lane.

No need explaining – the one remaining

Is somebody I adore.

I’m looking over a four-leaf clover

That I overlooked before.

I’m going to give you these shamrocks. They all have 4 leaves. Please write 4 things that you wish your classmates and exchange the shamrocks.

So, our short trip to the Emerald Island is over. We have visited the country of St. Patrick. What have we done? Suggested answers:

-We have learned some important facts about Ireland.

-We have revised information about traditions.

-We have learned about St. Patrick.

-We have learned how people celebrate St. Patrick’s Day.

I hope you enjoyed the trip. Now let,s sing a song about one more symbol of St. Patrick’s Day – rainbow. The rainbow symbolises the link between The Earth and the Heaven. Let’s sing the song and keep this day in our hearts.

Purple, blue, and green, these colours I have seen,

With yellow orange and red, in rainbows overhead. ( Kathlin Carroll, Marina Novikova “Holidays Go Round and Round, ООО «Издательство :Химера»,1998)
