«CROCODILES»
Crocodiles look like monsters from the past. They are the grandchildren of the dinosaur family. Crocodiles are amphibious. That means they live on the land and in the water most crocodiles live in rivers and lakes. A few crocodiles live in the sea. (43 w.)
There are crocodiles in Africa, Asia, America and Australia. The most crocodiles in Europe live in zoos crocodiles can swim fast and they can run fast. Their long tails help them swim. Crocodiles can bathe very well. During the day they lie in the sun, half – asleep. At night they eat. Look at the crocodile’s eye. It has got a long thin pupil, like a cat’s. This eye can see well at night. (115 w.)
Crocodiles often lie under the water for hours. You can only see their eyes and their noses above the water. The mother crocodile lays between 30 and 60 eggs. She sits and watches them for weeks. When she is watching them, she does not eat. At last the babies are ready to leave their eggs. The mother hears a ‘Croak! Croak!’ The eggs break, and the babies come out. They are only about 20 centimeters long, but they grow quickly. Their mother takes them to the water. Baby crocodiles eat small fish. (206 w.)
Crocodiles have got sharp, pointed teeth. They eat birds, fish and small animals. Sometimes they eat bigger animals, too, like pigs and cows. (229 w.)
You often see little birds called sic sacs near crocodiles. When the crocodile is lying in the sun, it leaves its mouth opens. The sic-sac bird runs inside the crocodile’s mouth and eats the little pieces of food on the crocodile’s teeth. Crocodiles do not usually eat people. They look very frightening though. (281 w.)
