TALKING LIKE THE ENGLISH

English people are very polite. They dislike rude people. If they don’t like something, they won’t say it in your face. For example, if somebody is rude, they will say “Well, this person is not very kind”. If the food at a restaurant is bad, they will say “To be quite honest, this isn't the best meal I have ever had”. If it’s boiling hot, they will say “It is a bit too warm here”.
They don’t like boasting either. If you praise someone, he or she will say: “Oh, it wasn’t really that hard” or “I was just lucky”.

This is called understatement.

Pretend you’re in England. What will you say…

…if your neighbours are noisy?

Do you talk to your neighbours or classmates when you meet them in the street? Be careful! English people think that many topics are too sensitive. It’s rude to talk about money or work. You can talk about such things only with close friends. Even talking about family is risky! What if they have fallen out with their parents or their great-grandfather has died? You can make them sad! Thankfully, there is one “safe” topic. It’s weather! That’s why English people talk about the weather so much.
