1. Прочитайте отрывок и назовите основную идею.

There are a lot of volcanoes on the Earth. A volcano is a mountain that forces hot gas, rocks, ash

and lava into the air through a hole at the top. Some volcanoes are not immediately dangerous

because they are not active and have become dormant. Others will never be dangerous again

because they are completely extinct. Active volcanoes can erupt. Some of them erupt slowly and

quietly. This slow eruption can last for months or even years. Sometimes volcanoes erupt very

quickly and noisily.

Under the surface of the earth it is very hot. The rocks are not hard and solid. They are thick and

liquid. This liquid rock is called magma. Sometimes there is an opening in the rocks on the

surface. Then magma can come up through this opening and the volcano erupts. Dust and pieces

of rock are thrown up into the air. Red hot lava pours down the sides of the mountains. Later on,

the lava cools and becomes hard rock.

1. Прочитайте отрывок и назовите основную идею.

The poisoning of the world's land, air, and water is the fastest-spreading disease of civilization.

The seas are in danger. Many companies dump chemical and nuclear waste into water. The

Mediterranean is already nearly dead; the North Sea is following. The Aral Sea is on the brink of

extinction. Half of the lakes in the world are polluted. If nothing is done about it, one day

nothing will be able to live in the seas.

Air pollution is a very serious problem. Because many factories release sulfates into the air/

when the sulfates mix with the clouds, acid rains fall and harm all living creatures. In Cairo just

breathing the air is life threatening- equivalent to smoking two packs of cigarettes a day.

Mexico City and 600 cities of Russia have dirty air. This causes different diseases. Because of different kinds of pollution every ten minutes one kind of animal, plant or insect dies out forever.

People are beginning to realize that environmental problems are our problem. These are a lot of

international green organizations that take care of the environment and «Green Peace» is one of

the most active organization.

About sixty years after the death of Alexandria Archimedes was born. Nobody knows the exact date of his birth, but according to the best authorities, he lived about 150 B. C. In addition to being a great mathematician, he invented the siphon, the gearwheel, the water clock and the steam engine. His book on mechanics translated into Arabic was carefully studied by mechanics and engineers of the sixteenth century. These five principles form the basis of all the machinery in the world today and though described in detail by Hero their practical application to machinery did not come about for more than a thousand years. They are: the lever, While it is true that the invention of the screw is attributed to Archimedes and the man, who showed for the first time that all machinery is based on these five important principles, and how to apply these principles to machinery – such as it was in these early times. Neither he nor anyone else of his time realized the importance of these inventions. Hero’s book on pneumatics, which was translated into Italian in 1549 and later into English, described more then seventy totally useless inventions, most of which had important basic principles.

Computer is a device for processing of information. Computer has no intelligence by itself and is called hardware. A computer system is a combination of four elements: hardware, software, procedures and data (information). Software are the programmes that tell the hardware how to perform a task. Without software instructions, the hardware doesn’t know what to do.

The basic job of the computer is the processing of information. Computers take information in the form of instructions called programs and symbols called data. After that they perform various mathematical and logical operations, and then give the results (information). Computer is used to convert data into information. Computer is also used to store information in the digital form.

Man began to think of space travel in the second century A.D. At that time a Greek, Lucian of Samos, wrote a fantastic story about a man who was carried to the Moon by a storm. In his second story about space, Lucian's hero flew to the Moon with a pair of wings which he had made himself.

But for the next 1400 years, in the years of the inquisition, people could not even think of

travelling to the Moon. About 300 years ago the famous Italian astronomer Galilei looked

through his telescope and told people about the other worlds which he had seen. Again people

began to think of reaching other planets.

In 1634, there appeared a story about a journey to the Moon by Johannes Kepler, the German

astronomer. He discovered how the planets moved around the Sun. Kepler was a scientist but in

his book his hero was carried to the Moon by «magic moon people», who could fly through

space. Kepler gave a detailed description of the Moon which he had seen through his telescope.

After Kepler's book, there were many others about space travel.

The first serious story of space travel was written in 1640 by Bishop Wilkins of England. He

possibly live on the Moon. The first man who wrote about a rocket as a spaceship was the

Frenchman, Cyrano de Bergerac. In his book his space travelers flew to the Moon and the Sun

When those books were written, nobody seriously thought about space travel. Then in 1865

Jules Verne, the French novelist, wrote the story «From the Earth to the Moon», in which he

tried to show the scientific principles of space travel. By the time that H. G. Wells, the English

author, wrote «The First Men on the Moon» in 1901, man was already at the beginning of a new

era in the development of air travel and conquering outer space.

Our world is becoming an increasingly complex place in which we are very dependent on

This increasing dependence, on both a national and international scale, forced us to create

systems that can respond immediately to dangers, enabling appropriate defensive or offensive

actions to be taken. These systems are operating all around us in military, civil, commercial and

  1. Прочитайте отрывок и назовите основную идею

The new global satellite-communication systems offer three kinds of service.

The first one is voice messages. Satellite telephones are able to make calls from anywhere on

the Earth to anywhere else. That makes them especially useful to use in remote, third-world

villages (some of which already use stationary satellite telephones), for explorers. Today's

mobile phones depend on earth-bound transmitters, whose technical standards vary from country

to country. Satellite telephones can solve this problem, but it is not a cheap service.

The second service is messaging. Satellite messages have the same global coverage as satellite

telephones, but carry text alone, which is extremely useful for those with laptop computers. As

we see, the Internet works in space too. The only problem for ordinary users is one-way

transmissions. This problem is solved by using combine transmissions, when you make a call

using land communications and receive ordered information through your satellite plate.

The third service is tracking. Voice and messaging systems also tell their users where they are

go within a few hundred meters. Combined with the messaging service, the location service could

help rescue teams, to find lost adventurers, the police to find stolen cars, exporters to follow the

progress of cargoes and so on. Satellite systems provide better positioning information to anyone

who has a receiver for their signals.

Ecology” is a very popular word today. However, what does it mean? “Ecology” is a science, which studies the relationships between all forms of life on the Earth with its environment. This word came from the Greek “oikos” which means “home”. This idea of home includes the whole planet of ours, its population, Nature, animals, birds, fish, insects, all other living beings and even the atmosphere around the Earth. Environmental protection is a universal concern. Active measures should be taken to create an international system of ecological security. Some progress has been made in this direction. 159 countries – members of the United Nations Organization – have set up environmental protection agencies. Many conferences have been held by these agencies to discuss ecological problems, some of which are of extreme urgency.
Since ancient times Nature has served Man giving him everything he needs: air to breathe, food to eat, water to drink, wood for building and fuel for heating his home. For thousands years people lived in harmony with environment, and the resources of Nature seemed to have no end and limit. But with the era of industrial revolution an end had been put to this harmony and our negative influence towards Nature began to increase rapidly. Large cities with thousands of steaming, polluting plants and factories can be found nowadays all over the world. The by-products of their activity pollute the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the fields where our crops are grown.

Every year the atmosphere is polluted with about 1, 000 tons of industrial dust and other harmful substances. Big cities suffer from smog. Cars with their engines have become the main source of pollution in industrial countries. Vast forests are cut down in Africa, South America and Asia for the needs of industries in Europe and the USA. The loss of the forests upsets the oxygen balance of the new wastelands. As a result some species of animals, birds, fish and plants have disappeared and keep disappearing. Rivers and lakes dry up. One of the recent examples is the Sea of Aral, which has become much smaller due to man’s activity. The pollution of air and the world’s oceans, the thinning of the ozone layer are the other problems arising from man’s careless attitude to ecology.
In Russia and former Soviet republics there are some areas where ecology is in a poor state. First of all it is the Sea of Aral, Baikal, Kuzbass, Semipalatinsk and Chernobyl, just to name a few. For decades, nuclear weapons were tested near Semipalatinsk and the ground is polluted with radiation there. More than twenty years ago a paper factory was built on the shore of Lake Baikal. As a result, because of the pollution, more than 50 per cent of the world’s purest water has been ruined. The whole ecological system of the lake has changed greatly. After the disaster in Chernobyl the inhabitants of the nearby towns and villages had to be evacuated. Some of them died and some have become invalids. Ecological catastrophes do a lot of harm to Nature but they are much more dangerous for Man. The question is whether humankind is going to live or die.

A genius and proficient physicist, mathematician, astronomer, and alchemist, Sir Isaac Newton is considered to be the greatest and the most influential scientist of all time. One of the paramount contributors of the 17th century ‘Scientific Revolution,’ he developed the principles of modern physics. Popularly known as ‘Principia,’ the book highlighted the concepts of universal gravitation and laws of motion for centuries. He worked on and developed the theory of color. He was the first to lay out the fact that color is an intrinsic property of light and that when reflected, scattered, or transmitted, a white light decomposes into numerous colors, often seen in the spectrum or in the rainbow.

He was responsible for building the first practical telescope. Newton also contributed to the study of power series, generalized the binomial theorem to non-integer exponents, and developed a method for approximating the roots of a function.

He began his working life when he was still a boy. He was the son of a fisherman, so he often went with his father to the White Sea and to the Arctic Ocean. At the age of 19 the young man left his house and went on foot to Moscow. Lomonosov wanted to have an education. He entered the Slavonic-Greek-Latin Academy in Moscow. In 1736, he was sent to Germany to study mineralogy and chemistry. Lomonosov became the first Russian professor of chemistry at the Academy in 1745 Lomonosov was also a great physicist, chemist and astronomer. He formulated the main principles of one of the basic laws of physics – the law of conservation of matter and motion. Besides this Lomonosov wrote poetry (verses) that had a great effect on the development of the Russian literary language. He wrote the first Russian grammar. In 1765, Lomonosov caught a cold and died at the age of 54. He is buried in the cemetery of Alexander Nevsky Monastery in St. Petersburg, Russia.

  1. Прочитайте отрывок и назовите основную идею

A volcano is an opening in the Earth’s crust where hot liquid rock from deep within the Earth, called magma, erupts to the surface.

When rock beneath the Earth’s surface gets hot, it becomes molten or liquid. While it is still below the surface, it is called magma. Once the magma erupts to the surface through a volcano, it is called lava. The hotter and thinner the lava is, the farther it will flow. Lava can be very hot, sometimes as hot as 1000 degrees C. Eventually lava on the surface will stop flowing, cool, and harden into rocks. Rocks formed from lava cooling are called igneous rocks. Some examples of igneous rocks include basalt and granite.

A volcano can be active, dormant, or extinct. An active volcano is one that has recently erupted or is currently erupting. A dormant volcano is one that has nоt erupted for a long time, but has the potential to still erupt. An extinct volcano is one that scientists think will never erupt again. The tallest volcano we know of in the Solar System is on Mars. It is called Olympus Mons and is 17 miles tall.

1851 was the year of the Great Exhibition: a celebration of the product of the Industrial Revolution in England. Queen Victoria’s husband, the Prince Consort was one of the key instigators of the Great Exhibition. In five and a half months, over six million people visited the exhibition held in the famous Crystal Palace in Hyde Park, London.

Crystal Palace was a huge building of iron and glass built especially for the occasion, this exhibition was a stylistic anarchy, with most objects displaying ornament for ornaments’ sake.

The Prince Consort wanted the manufacturers to use good design in their products. Many manufacturers exhibiting spent a lot of effort, for the first time, to use good design to show off their products.

He

described physical conditions on the Moon and he also said about the ways in which man could

possibly live on the Moon. The first man who wrote about a rocket as a spaceship was the

Frenchman, Cyrano de Bergerac. In his book his space travellers flew to the Moon and the Sun

Our world is becoming an increasingly complex place in which we are very dependent on

other people and organizations. An event in some distant part of the globe can rapidly and

significantly affect the quality of life in our home country.

This increasing dependence, on both a national and international scale, forced us to create

systems that can respond immediately to dangers, enabling appropriate defensive or offensive

actions to be taken. These systems are operating all around us in military, civil, commercial and

industrial fields. A worldwide system of satellites has been created and it is possible to transmit

signals around the globe by bouncing them from one satellite to an earth station and then to

another satellite and so on.

The question is whether humankind is going to live or die.2.

Lomonosov was the first Russian scientist of world importance.

Mikhail Vasilyevich Lomonosov was born on the 19th of November in 1711 near Kholmogory in the village of Denisovka in the Archangelsk region. Lomonosov was the first Russian scientist of world importance. He had encyclopedic knowledge, interests and abilities. He was a poet, artist and historian.

The Great Exhibition was a trade promotion show to the rest of the Empire and it became a catalyst for Industrial Design and was the start of the Arts and Crafts Movement.

Volcanoes on the Earth

Ecological problems

Archimed

Computers

Computer is a device for processing of information. Computer has no intelligence by itself and is called hardware. A computer system is a combination of four elements: hardware, software, procedures and data (information). Software are the programmes that tell the hardware how to perform a task. Without software instructions, the hardware doesn’t know what to do.

The basic job of the computer is the processing of information. Computers take information in the form of instructions called programs and symbols called data. After that they perform various mathematical and logical operations, and then give the results (information). Computer is used to convert data into information. Computer is also used to store information in the digital form.

The road to stars

He described physical conditions on the Moon and he also said about the ways in which man could possibly live on the Moon.

The first man who wrote about a rocket as a spaceship was the Frenchman, Cyrano de Bergerac. In his book his space travellers flew to the Moon and the Sun in the rocket.

When those books were written, nobody seriously thought about space travel. Then in 1865 Jules Verne, the French novelist, wrote the story «From the Earth to the Moon», in which he tried to show the scientific principles of space travel. By the time that H. G. Wells, the English author, wrote «The First Men on the Moon» in 1901, man was already at the beginning of a new era in the development of air travel and conquering outer space.

Satellites and Telecommunications

Our world is becoming an increasingly complex place in which, we are very dependent on other people and organizations. An event in some distant part of the globe can rapidly and significantly affect the quality of life in our home country.
This increasing dependence, on both a national and international scale, forced us to create systems that can respond immediately to dangers, enabling appropriate defensive or offensive actions to be taken. These systems are operating all around us in military, civil, commercial and industrial fields.
A worldwide system of satellites has been created and it is possible to transmit signals around the globe by bouncing them from one satellite to an earth station and then to another satellite and soon.
Originally designed to carry voice messages, they are able to carry hundreds of thousands of separate simultaneous calls. These systems are being adopted to provide for business communications, including the transmission of voice and facsimile messages, data and video data.
It is probable that future wide use of satellites in the area of telecommunications will provide a great variety of information services to transmit directly into our homes, possibly including personalized electronic mail. The electronic computer is at the heart of many such systems, but the role of telecommunications is not less important- There will be a further convergence between the technologies of computing and telecommunications. The change of this kind will lead us to the database culture, the cashless society, the office at home, the gigabit-per-second data network.
One cannot doubt that the economic and social impact of these concepts will be very significant. Already, advanced systems of communication are affecting both the layman and the technician.
The new global satellite-communication systems offer three kinds of service.
The first one is voice messages. Satellite telephones are able to make calls from anywhere on the? Earth to anywhere else. That makes them especially useful to use in remote, third-world villages (some of which already use stationary satellite telephones), for explorers. Today's mobile phones depend on earth-bound transmitters, whose technical standards vary from country to country. Satellite telephones can solve this problem, but it is not a cheap service.
The second service is messaging. Satellite messages have the same global coverage as satellite telephones, but carry text alone, which is extremely useful for those with laptop computers. As we see, the Internet works in space too. The only problem for ordinary users is one-way transmissions. This problem is solved by using combine transmissions, when you make a call using land communications and receive ordered information through your satellite plate.
The third service is tracking. Voice and messaging systems also tell their users where they are to within a few hundred meters. Combined with the messaging service, the location service could help rescue teams, to find lost adventurers, the police to find stolen cars, exporters to follow the progress of cargoes and so on. Satellite systems provide better positioning information to anyone who has a receiver for their signals.

Ecological problems

The by-products of their activity pollute the air we breathe, the water we drink, and the fields where our crops are grown
