Lesson Plan

The domain: Home Reading

The theme: Matilda by Roald Dahl. Chapter 6-7.

2. The aim: to develop SS’ intercultural-communicative skills and competences in the context of the domain and the theme under consideration (Matilda by Roald Dahl)
3.The targeted objectives:

  • Raising the SS’ awareness of the necessity to develop communicative competence and critical thinking in order to encourage students to become more competent learners;

  • Development of the SS’ critical thinking skills and public speaking skills: discussing thought provoking questions related to the theme;

  • Development of the SS’ ability and readiness to carry out argumentative discussion on the topic "Book vs. Movie";

4.Competences to develop: intercultural-communicative (lingua-cultural, socio-cultural, social, developing reflective), instrumental, interpersonal, systemic.

5.Materials&Resources:

  1. Videos.

  2. Additional sheets; handouts

  3. A4 sheets, notebook

6.The Learning Outcome (result/product): develop intercultural awareness through reading and discussion the difference between the book and the film of Matilda, also on the bases of the given materials develop critical thinking, intercultural communicative competences.

Motivation-oriented stage/Lead-in:
Conversation and discussion about the film “Matilda”:

1) To show some episodes from the film Matilda.

2) After watching the video the whole class will discuss the following questions:

  • What are your feelings about the main character in the book vs. the movie?

  • Do you like he/she looked?

  • Did he/she match hat you imagined from reading the book?

  • What might you have changed in the movie of you were making it?

Stage of preparedness to intercultural professional-oriented communication


Objective: formation of intercultural communicative and critical thinking competencies.


Discuss with the students some quotes and questions that given below:

  • Describe Mrs. Trunchbull. What were some

of her punishment techniques?

  • Who was Matilda’s first friend? How did they meet?

  • Describe Miss Honey. Why did Miss Honey visit the Wormwood house?

  • “ A girl does not get anywhere by acting intelligent.” Who said this?
