The Ryazan region is located in forest-steppe zone. The great forests are in the northern and in the central parts of the region. They occupy over 20% of the territory of our region. The basic trees are the pine and the birch. There are many different kinds of animals (50), birds (200) and fish (30). There you can see foxes, bears, wolves, hares, beavers, squirrels, polecats, ground squirrel, elks, European bisons, deer, desmans. A lot of birds inhabit the territory; they are teals, grey ducks, white owls, cranes.

Forest is our greatest value. We use it as a building and industrial material, as a place for rest. There are many resorts, camps for children and tourists. Solotcha is one of the most popular and favorite places to have a rest.

In 1935 to keep natural richness of Meshchera it was organized The Oka State reserve. It is a great forest territory. Animals and birds live there free in nature: beavers, European bisons, deer, desmans, white owls. In 1954 in our region it was formed the community of protecting nature.
