Александр решил более широко ознакомиться с проблемой курения у подростков. Он прочел статью Пола Стоукса «Помогите нам бросить курить – говорят подростки.»
Alexander decided to become more familiar with the problem of smoking in adolescents. He read an article by Paul Stokes “Help us give up smoking - teenagers say.”
“Help us give up smoking, say teenagers” by Paul Stokes.
A school in Durham has a new lesson – how to stop smoking. Teenagers asked for the lunchtime lessons in place of smoking in the toilets. Teachers at Longfield Secondary School joined them to make the school a smoke-free area.
1._______________
The school has got a strict no-smoking policy, but some teachers and cleaners smoke. Karen Robinson, the school nurse, helps with the lessons. So far, only eleven pupils say they have a problem with tobacco. However, she is optimistic. Teachers and students meet every day for about twenty minutes. ‘The pupils and teachers want to give up the nasty habit,’ says Karen. ‘They help each other in these meetings.’
2._______________
Liam Brady, 15, started smoking when he was twelve. ‘I thought it was cool to smoke. Now I know it’s stupid. I smoked a packet of cigarettes a day and never had money to go out or buy CDs.’
3._______________
Jane Lomas, 16, agrees. ‘I thought it was a glamorous thing to do, but it’s not. It’s bad for you – and your breath and clothes don’t smell very nice! I really want to stop. When I want a cigarette. I chew some special chewing gum. That’s really useful for me.’
4._______________
Clive Bates, director of any anti-smoking group, said: ‘The teenagers are right to get help. They can see it’s not a clever thing to do. I hope more schools follow their example.’

An example of a dialogue
Why do people continue smoking?
Почему люди курят?
Journalist: At the moment I’m working on one project and I want to ask you some questions.
Ann: What’s it about?
Journalist: About smoking. You know I don’t smoke and I don’t like the smell of smoke.
Ann: Yes, that’s true. You are a fan of healthy lifestyle. As for me I do smoke, but I’m trying to quit. If I can help you somehow with the project, you can ask me your questions.
Journalist: Well, first of all I need to write about the reasons for smoking. Then I need to make a list of negative effects of this bad habit and to work out the way for the younger generation to avoid it.
Kate: That must be a useful project. If someone like you told me about the harm of smoking when I was a teen, perhaps I wouldn’t even have started it.
Journalist: That’s why I want to make a resultative project. So, can you name at least three reasons why you smoke?
Kate: At first, it was just the way to keep a company to my smoking friends. I think I sometimes smoke not because I want a cigarette, but simply for being social.
Journalist: In that case, I’ll have to find some strong arguments against your reason. What’s the next one?
Natalie: The second reason is of course the dependence on nicotine. Once you start smoking, you become dependent on it.
Journalist: Any other reasons?
Ann: Yes, one more. I think I tend to smoke more when I get nervous. It seems to soothe me. However, I don’t know whether it has any logical proof.
Journalist: How do you feel after smoking: healthy, full of energy or depressed and exhausted.
Ann: More likely depressed and exhausted. It seems to take a lot of energy and health.
Journalist: As for soothing the nerves, in my opinion it’s just a short-term effect which is not worth it. It’s more of a psychological nature.
Natalie: That’s a strong argument I should say
Ann: Well, after chatting with you I want to reconsider my views on smoking.
Journalist: I hope you mean you want to quit?
Kate: That’s what I’d like to do.
Journalist: I’m glad to hear it. I hope that my project will help many other people as well. somebody’s
