Task 3: Write scientists’ surnames.

1. Charles ________ (1792 - 1871) a British mathematician who designed a type of calculating machine which modern computers are based.

2. Charles ________ (1809 - 1882) a British scientist who developed the Theory of Evolution, the idea that plants and animals develop gradually from simple to more complicated forms by natural selection. He wrote about his ideas in his book «On the origin of Species» (1859).

3. James Prescott ________ (1818 - 1889) is a famous British physicist. He is best known for his research in electricity. In the course of his research of the heat emitted in an electrical circuit, he formulated the law. The law states that that the amount of heat produced each second in a conductor by electric current is proportional to the resistance of the conductor and to the square of the current.

4. James Clerk ________ (1831 - 1879) is a British scientist who made important discoveries in electromagnetism, which made possible the development of radio and telephones.

5. Isaac ________ (1642 - 1727) a British physicist and mathematician who is best known for discovering gravity. He made many other important scientific discoveries, and is considered to be one of most important scientists who ever lived. He is often shown in pictures holding an apple, because there is the story that he discovered the law of gravity when an apple fell on his head while he was sitting under a tree.

6. Alan ________ (1912 - 1954) is a British mathematician and computer scientist, who developed ideas which were later used to build the first electronic computer, and which also influenced the development of the study of artificial intelligence. During World War II he helped to find out the meaning of the German military codes (secret writing system used for sending messages).

7. Alexander Graham ________ (1847 - 1922) is a Scottish scientist and inventor who lived in the USA, best known for inventing the telephone in 1876. He also started the Telephone Company.

8. Thomas Alva ________ (1847 - 1931) a US inventor who made over 1300 electrical inventions, including the microphone, the record player, and equipment for the cinema. He is also for inventing the light bulb.

9. Albert ________ (1879 - 1955) a US physicist and mathematician, born in Germany, who developed the Theory of Relativity, which completely changed the way that scientists understand space and time. He is considered to be one of the greatest scientists and one of the most intelligent people ever born, and people sometimes use his name to talk about someone who is very intelligent.

10. James ________ (1736 - 1819) a British engineer who made important improvements to the steam engine, although he did not actually invent it, as some people wrongly believe. The measure of electrical power is named after him.

11. William Henry __________ (1955) a US computer programmer and businessman, who stated the Microsoft computer company and is famous for being the richest man in the world.

12. Steve ________ (1955 - 2011) a US computer designer, inventor and businessman who, together with Steve Wozniak, designed and built the first real personal computer and started the Apple computer company.
