Russia: figure skating

• Figure skating is a popular sport in Russia with children learning to skate at a young age. The country has a long history of producing champion skaters winning the gold medal in pairs skating at every Winter Olympic Games from1964 to 2006. It is a demanding sport that tests a skater’s ability to keep control and maintain balance on the ice. There are disciplines at International level, men’s singles, women’s singles, pairs skating and ice dancing. A skating competition includes technical elements such as jumps, spins, lifts and throws combined in a graceful dance set to music.

The USA-baseball nation

• In the USA, many children learn baseball from a very young age. Schools often have their own baseball team and they play against one another in championship. In baseball, there are two teams of nine players and they play on a diamond-shaped field. Many American kids have their own favourite baseball hero and love wearing their favourite team colours.
