New York, one of the largest cities in the world, was founded three hundred years ago in the mouth of the Hudson River. It is also called The Big Apple.
It is named for Henry Hudson, who explored it in 1609.
New York City is a global economic center. The city is also an important cultural center, with many museums, galleries. Home of the United Nations Organization.
There are many places of interest in New York. They are: the Statue of Liberty, the United Nations Building, Empire State Building, Columbia University, City Hall, New York Public Library and others.
The city is divided into five district s :
1. Manhattan, 2. Brooklyn, 3. Queens, 4. Bronx, 5. Staten Island
The centre of New York is Manhattan Island. In 1626 it was bought from the Indians for a sum of twenty- four dollars.
Today Manhattan is the centre of business and commercial life of the country. There are many skyscrapers, banks and offices of American businessmen in Manhattan.
The first skyscraper was built in 1888. It had only thirteen floors, but the next one had twenty-two. The Empire State Building has 102 floors.
The Empire State Building reaches 443 m. It has 6,500 windows. It has a total floor area of 254,000 m².
NY city was one of the sites of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, when nearly 3,000 people died in the destruction of the World Trade Center .
Very few people live in Manhattan .
Numerous bridges link Manhattan Island with the other parts of New York.
Brooklyn was an independent city until 1898.
The Brooklyn Bridge is one of the oldest bridge in the United States.
Queens . Historically a collection of small towns and villages founded by the Dutch, today the district of middle class. It is also the home to New York City's two major airports, LaGuardia Airport and John F. Kennedy International Airport .
The Bronx. It is home to the Bronx Zoo. The Bronx is the birthplace of rap and hip hop culture.
Wall Street is the financial centre of the U. S. The Wall Street is one of the most famous streets in New York .
Chinatown is another tourist attraction of New York. It has a lot of restaurants and small shops.
Manhattan
Manhattan is divided into two sides: the West Side and the East Side. There is also a division into Downtown, Midtown and Uptown Manhattan.
The Statue of Liberty [ ' stætju ɔv ' lɪbətɪ] is the American symbol of freedom. The Statue was given to the USA as a gift by the French.
The statue is 46.5 meters, with the foundation adding another 46.9 m. it contains the text "JULY IV MDCCLXXVI" (July 4, 1776) commemorating the date of the United States Declaration of Independence.
New York is a well-planned city. Streets are called by numbers or letters of the alphabet, for example, First Avenue, Second Street, Avenue B and so on.
The city traffic is very busy.

Broadway is the centre of the theatres and night life.
Fifth Avenue is the great shopping, hotel, and club avenue.

New York City has over 113 km² of parkland and 22 km of public beaches. Manhattan's Central Park is the most visited city park in the United States.

Washington Square Park is one of the best-known of New York City's 1,700 public parks. Most of the buildings surrounding the park now belong to New York University. The university rents the park for its graduation ceremonies, and uses the Arch as a symbol.
