Danger everywhere
A1.________________________
If the government wanted to build a nuclear power station at the end of your street, what would you think? You would probably protest about it. But in fact, living (A6) next to a nuclear power station is less dangerous than driving a car and much safer than riding a motorbike or smoking.
A2. ________________________
Everything (A7) carries a risk - even walking down the street or staying at home. Dying in an accident at home is not surprising.
A3. ________________________
One reason is (A8) publicity. When an aeroplane crashes, a lot of people are killed at the same time. A plane crash is big news. A car crash is not. But travelling by road is the most dangerous. In 1985 over 2000 people died in air (A9) disasters. But, in Britain alone 5000 people die in road accidents every year. And Britain’s roads are the safest in the world. The risk of dying in a plane crash is 25,000 to 1. Car drivers, however, run a risk of 11,000 to 1 and motorcyclists a (A10) horrific 500 to 1. In spite of this, fear of flying is more (A11) common than fear of travelling by car.
A4. ______________________
A second reason is choice. If we choose to do something dangerous, we (A12) accept the risk. But we don’t like it when someone chooses it for us. We accept risks because we get some (A13) benefit from the activity. We accept the risks of driving a car or playing sports, because they make our lives interesting. People don’t often choose safe things. For example, people choose to smoke when smoking twenty cigarettes a day carries a 200 to 1 risk of death from heart (A14) disease and lung cancer.
A5. _______________________
A third reason is age. Over 70% of all motorcycle accidents (A15)involve young men between 16 and 25. Every summer millions of young people risk skin cancer from sunbathing because they want to look beautiful and healthy.
