Nine cities initially submitted applications to host the 2012 Olympic Games: Paris (France), Leipzig (Germany), New York (United States of America), Istanbul (Turkey), Havana (Cuba), Moscow (Russian Federation), London (Great Britain), Madrid (Spain) and Rio de Janeiro (Brazil).
The 2012 Summer Olympics, officially the Games of the XXX Olympiad, and also more generally known as London 2012, was a major international sport event, as governed by the International Olympic Committee (IOC), that took place in London, United Kingdom, from 27 July to 12 August 2012. More than 10,000 athletes from 204 participated.
London was selected as the host city on 6 July 2005 during the 117th IOC Session in Singapore, defeating bids from Moscow, New York City, Madrid and Paris. London is the first city to officially host the modern Olympic Games three times, having previously done so in 1908 and in 1948.
The opening ceremony of the 2012 Summer Olympics was held on 27 July 2012 and was called “Isles of Wonder”. Danny Boyle was the artistic director for the opening ceremony and the music directors were Rick Smith and Karl Hyde of the electronic music duo Underworld.
Sir Paul McCartney performed the song “Hey Jude” at the end of the ceremony.
The main venues – the Olympic Stadium, Aquatics Centre, Velodrome. The Olympic Village was within walking distance of all the venues in the Park. The use of other prestigious venues – such as Wembley Stadium for football, the All-England Club in Wimbledon for tennis, Lord’s Cricket Ground for archery and Horse Guards Parade for beach volleyball – is also a feature of the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
