Do you agree? (Ответы детей)
Well, even if your opinion is not the same, you can’t but agree that the roots of the majority of your problems are in your families and school.
T: Thank you. That's nice of you. I want you to continue discussion. The next question to discuss is: Where do teens meet problems?
PP:
– in the family
– at school
– in the street
Why do teens have problems?
P1: On the one hand, our society agrees that 15-17 – year – old people are old enough to be responsible for what they do and give them quite a lot of freedom and rights. On the other hand, most adults think that teenagers are too young to be taken seriously. This misunderstanding produces many problems.
P2: A lot of teenagers say that their parents let them do anything they want and are quite indifferent to their problems. Many teenagers get upset or depressed when they can't solve their problems.
P3: Aggressiveness, violence and cruelty come from the TV screen and from the pages of newspapers and are becoming a fact of peoples everyday life.
T: Good for you. But who can help teens?
PP:
– teenagers themselves
– parents
– teachers
– specialists
– government
T: The next question is:
How to solve the problems?
P1: To my mind school teachers and parents can help in many problems.
P2: Adults can help teenagers to overcome difficulties if the pay more attention to teens’ problems.
T. You are right . It goes without saying that thousands of teenagers in the world have the similar problems. And sometimes they write letters to different magazines when they have nobody to talk with.
Now, read one of such letters and try to understand what the boy’s problem is.
.(Письмо)
Дети читают письмо и определяют проблему.
All of my friends get a lot of pocket money and spend it on anything they want. But my parents are against pocket money. They buy me fashionable clothes and other things that I need, but they refuse to give me any money. The situation is very embarrassing.
So I decided to earn my own money. I found an evening job, but my parents were against it. They said I had to study and do sports after school and not work in the evening. That's fine, but I'm nearly fifteen and I'd like to be me more independent. So I started to work in our local McDonald's. I worked on Friday evenings and told my parents that I'd been at the disco. Everything went fine until one day I came home late.
One of the other workers at the restaurant was ill and I had to do his job for him. I was very busy with the customers, so I couldn't phone either. My parents were very angry, but I promised not to be late again. Unfortunately, on the Friday after that something happened again, so I was late again. Now my parents are very angry with me. They don't let me out any more. What should I do?
T. So what is the boy’s problem? Do you have a problem of pocket money? Do you need it?
(Ответы детей)
You see John’ parents are very angry with him. Are they right? What’s your opinion?
P.1 I think they are not right because they don’t even know the reason of his absence at home.
. P.2 I can’t agree with you. John’s parents trusted him, he promised not to be late again. Besides he lied to them.
P.3 But he wanted to earn some money to be more independent and his parents didn’t let him.
(Ответы детей)
T. Can you predict the ending of this story? (Ответы детей) (Спросить на русском)
P. I believe John’ parents won’t let him go out because when we ask them “Why…” they usually answer "That's none of your business."
P. And it seems to me they will have a talk and understand each other because adults are much more wiser.
Now listen and try to understand if you were right.
(Аудирование) T. Did they reach a compromise? (Ответы детей) How do you think why?
P. They didn’t reach a compromise because John’s father refused to talk to him.
T. Now I would like to give you a piece of advice: Don’t just expect your parents to understand you. If they don’t, it could be your fault. It’s very important to learn to communicate effectively.
Here are some phrases that we often use in arguments. Your group will choose those, that help to build bridges in a conversation and yours that will burn them.

24. "I think I have overreacted." | Думаю, я слишком остро отреагировал." |
(Ответы детей)
Now we are going to listen to a dialogue. John and his parents decided to have a talk.
Mom: Why don't we just sit down and talk?
Dad: OK. That's a good idea. I think I've overreacted. (Думаю, я слишком остро отреагировал). So what was it about the pocket money then?
John: Well, let me start by saying that this is very important to me. I have to admit that I lied to you because I didn't know what to do.
Dad: What happened?
John: You didn't give me any pocket money and you didn't let me have a job either. So I decided to find myself a part-time job. All this time I've been working in McDonald's, and on Fridays they always have a lot of customers. That's why I was late.
Mom: But that's awful. Working in McDonald's is a waste of time!
John: Mom, please. It really upsets me when you say that.
Mom: You're right. I'm sorry. But why did you do that?
John: Because I wanted to have my own money.
Dad: But we buy everything you need. What haven't you got?
John: I didn't want to ask you for money every time I needed something.
Dad: I understand that, but we've never refused to give it to you.
John: Yes, but I wanted to be more independent. It's important for me to make my own decisions and plan how I'll spend my money.
Dad: That didn't occur to me before.
Mom: Your feelings are very important to us, but what about school? You've had a lot of bad marks in the last couple of months.
Dad: Yes, it's really not good enough.
John: Please give me a second chance I really deserve it. I've never had bad marks before... you know that.
Dad: I think we can reach a compromise. You can work three evenings a week - on Friday. Saturday and Sunday. What do you think?
John: That's great. Dad! And I will get better marks. I promise.
T. Did they reach a compromise now? (Ответы детей)
T. To understand each other better we must find out what parents and children want, expect from each other.
Now, I want you to do a group work. Look through the given expressions and try to answer the question from the point of view of parents and children. Use complex object.
Begin your sentences in such a way: Parents (want, would like, expect) their children…..or (don’t want, wouldn’t like, don’t expect)
Children (want, would like, expect) their parents….. or (don’t want, wouldn’t like, don’t expect)
To take them seriously, to obey them, to control their life, to make them do their homework, to be tolerant and patient, to be more responsible, to treat him like a child, to express their own individuality, not to talk back and lie, not to rebel against the society, the way the children dress and their hair style, to treat them with respect, to understand that they worry about them, to understand that they care about them, to understand their problems better, to give them a chance to make their own mistakes, to help them in solving each others' problems, to do well at school and get good education, to pay more attention to their problems.
Parents (want, would like, expect) their children to… | Parents (don’t want, wouldn’t like, don’t expect) their children to… |
Children (want, would like, expect) their parents to… | Children (don’t want, wouldn’t like, don’t expect) their parents to… |
T. How can children and grown-ups reach a compromise in different situations?
Pupil 1: I think we must learn to listen, to hear, to talk and understand.
Pupil 2: We must analyze the reason of our problems.
Pupil 3: We must try to understand your parents and explain to them that you can be responsible and they can rely on you in some things.
Pupil 4. Our parents have their own life experience and they know better how we should behave in this or that situation and we must trust them.
T. We see that all problems in the family can be solved if parents and teenagers try to understand each other. And if not it may cause many troubles because when a teenager is not needed, when he is lost, he becomes dangerous for himself or for others. This is the way to nowhere.
And how do you think what a teenager will do if nobody understands him and doesn’t want to listen to him?
P. I think, he may join a bad company, become very aggressive and even kill.
T. That’s true. Look at the screen. Do you know anything about this boy?
(Ответы детей)
But to tell the truth, nobody knows the reasons of such his behavior. Unfortunately, it is not the only case. So, at home I want you to read a text about some reasons of teen’s violence and find more information on this very important problem.
T: Now, we are making a conclusion of our serious work at this lesson.
Сould you tell me what you've learned from today's lesson?
P1 . We found out that teenagers ' lives are not easy, but still there are ways to solve problems and avoid conflicts.
P2 . Now we know that it`s very important to have people that we can rely on and who can give us help and support.
T. You can’t but agree with me that our life is full of problems and conflicts of different sorts. But we cannot be happy and successful if we don`t know how to solve different problems and we don`t want to find ways out of difficult situations. Leo Tolstoy once wrote: “All happy families are alike.” I believe it is true. When a family is happy it means that all members of the family trust each other, tell each other about their joys and sorrows. The family plays a very important role in everybody’s life. I thank you for your work.
