Hanukkah is one of the most home-based of the Jewish holidays.

Hanukkah is the victory of good over evil.

It reminds people about the ancient miracle that happened hundreds years ago, when the Jews defended the right to their religion and culture.

The Maccabees, a small group of Jewish fighters liberated the Land of Israel from the Greeks who occupied it

When the soldiers liberated Jerusalem they had to light the sacred fire in the Temple. Soldiers found a small jug of oil, but it was enough to light the Menorah. It was a miracle that the Menorah burned for 8 days.

After that the tradition to celebrate Hanukkah was born. And every night orthodox Jews light Menorah in their temples and homes.

The Origin of the Dreidel

Many years ago Rabbi maintained that Jews played with the dreidels in order to fool the Greeks who did not allow to study Torah, because it was outlawed

Traditional Hanukkah meal

In this days people prepare traditional Hanukkah dishes: potato pancakes ("latkes" in Yiddish) and donuts. Hanukkah meals are cooked with olive oil that recalls the miracle of Hanukkah. Also people eat dairy food - special dishes made with cheese.

Many children like Hanukah because they enjoy meeting their friends and relatives during this holiday. They have a lot of fun and joy.
