T: you are going to listen to a text about the cities of Great Britain and interesting information about them.

T: We are going to work on the listening in order to identify the places of interest of the different cities. First, have a look at activity sheet Ex 1. While listening, match the places of interest to the cities in the activity sheet.

In Great Britain there are lots of places to visit. Most of big cities and small places have something to show. London certainly takes the first place in popularity. There is so much to do and to see in the capital. For example, London’s parks and gardens, that are really famous. If you travel to the north of England, to Newcastle upon Tyne, you’ll see a very old castle that once gave the name to the city and an old town bridge across the River Tyne. York is famous for its beautiful Gothic cathedral, one of the largest in the northern Europe. In Wimbledon near London those interested in sport can find some very good tennis courts and play on them. The old city of Bath in the southwest of England is famous for some ancient Roman buildings which lots of tourists come to see. Brighton, a seaside resort, is popular with holidaymakers because of its sandy beaches. Stratford-on-Avon, the birthplace of William Shakespeare, has got a world famous theatre. And Bristol is a big sea port from which ships sail to all parts of the world.
