Past Continuous (was/were+ V-ing)

Образование Past Continuous

• Past Continuous  образуется по схеме: 

• to be  (was/were) +  Present Participle  (глагол с -ing).

• Основное значение : длительное действие, происходившее в определенный момент в прошлом.
• Например:  I  was sleep ing at six am .

Употребление Past Continuous

1. Действие происходило в определенный момент в прошлом. Началось оно до этого момента.

• В таком случае момент обычно уточняется с помощью:

а) указания времени:

• I was hav ing my breakfast at nine.

• We were not walk ing at midnight .

б) другого действия:

• I was sleep ing when you turned on the TV.

• What were you do ing when the news started?

Употребление Past Continuous

2. Длительное действие, происходившее в определенный промежуток времени в прошлом (но не непрерывно).

• I was writ ing an article last week .

3. Повторяющееся действие с негативным оттенком, в сочетании с наречиями типа always, constantly.

• Past Continuous в сочетании с наречиями типа always, constantly (имеющими значение «все время») выражает неприятное, раздражающее действие, которое регулярно происходило в прошлом. Этот оборот характерен для разговорной речи.

She was always com ing to class late.

He was constantly talk ing .

Употребление Past Continuous

Affirmative – утвердительная форма предложения

He was cook ing dinner when you called.

I was read ing a book all day.

Negative – отрицательная форма предложения

I wasn’t play ing computer when Dad’s washed dishes.

Употребление Past Continuous

Interrogative – вопросительная форма предложения

Was she walk ing her dog when I called ?

Short answers – короткий ответ

Yes, she was.

No, she wasn’t.

Were they sleep ing at 7 o’clock?

Yes, they were.

No, they won’t.

3 способа задать время Past Continuous

• Задать точное время в прошлом:

At 1o’clock we were sunbath ing .

• Совместить два длительных действия в прошлом:

While I was wash ing up, he was watch ing TV.

• Совместить длительное действие в прошлом с кратковременным действием:
• I was sleep ing when the rain started .

REMEMBER!

• С некоторыми глаголами Past Continuous

НЕ употребляется!

Эти глаголы употребляются в Past Simple .

• to love - любить
• to remember – помнить
• to like – нравиться
• to need – нуждаться
• to forget – забывать
• to be – быть, находиться
• to hate - ненавидеть

REMEMBER!

Эти глаголы употребляются в Past Simple .

• to see – видеть
• to know – знать
• to hear – слышать
• to want – хотеть
• to believe – верить
• to understand – понимать
• to love – любить
• to like – нравиться

• A: What were you doing at 7 o’clock on Saturday morning?

Open the brackets:

• They (play) cards when the postman (come).
• She (have) her supper when she (hear) about the accident.
• When the phone (ring) mum (work) in the garden.
• Sam (take) a photo when I (dance).
• They (read) a book when the lights (go) out.
• While George (repair) his bike Bill (play) computer games.
• Alice (read) a message on her mobile at 9 o’clock yesterday evening.
