• Trends in the development of ecological tourism are determined by the World Tourism Organization (WTO). According to the forecasts of this organization, ecological tourism is among the five main strategic directions of development for the period up to 2020.

• According to expert estimates, the number of people concerned about the state of nature is growing. Environmental ill-being develops in some people the need to change their own attitude to nature, in others - to actively participate in its protection and preservation, in the third - the most conscious - in restoration. Some of the people, not limited to their own efforts, seeks to attract supporters to their active work.

• The main stream of ecotourists in the world are residents of industrialized countries, who are interested in nature and life, preserved in the virgin corners of the planet. Of particular interest are the exotic nature and culture of the countries of Africa, Asia, Central America. Purposeful policy of host countries contributes to the formation of a large flow of ecotourists to Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa, China, Thailand, Ecuador. Costa Rica, as well as New Zealand, Australia, etc.

• At the same time, travelers who are interested in the untouched nature of their own country or countries of their continent make up a large share of tourist flows. Such trips are typical for Americans traveling through their own national parks, Europeans choosing the untouched territories of the Scandinavian countries for recreation, etc.

• The main factors motivating the development of ecological tourism are the desire of people to join nature during their holidays, to be able to breathe clean air, drink and swim in clean water, consume organic products, and get aesthetic pleasure from contemplating natural landscapes.

The growth in the volume of ecotourism trips will be facilitated by:

• the growing importance of day-to-day environmental problems in the countries of destination;
• increasing the target ecotourism group at the expense of children who are instilled with a conscious attitude to environmental protection;
• increased efforts to provide tourism in host countries.

• Back in the 1990s. "Ecological tourism" has acquired an official status in the form of international and national ecotourism societies. Thus, the International Union for Ecological Tourism in Europe functions, and in 2001 the Russian Ecological Tourism Association was established.

• National parks, the territories of which are intended to preserve and maintain the diversity of the existing natural and cultural landscapes, are becoming a favorable factor in the development of ecological tourism. With regard to ecological tourism, national parks should be considered as key areas where the most comprehensive development of the service sector and the organization of routes of various thematic directions is possible.
