The city's history

According to the order of Peter the Great the first corner stone of an iron and cannon foundry was laid in the thick forest on the shore of Lake Onega. A workmen's settlement was founded around the factory and called the Petrovskaya Sloboda.

The settlement was given the town status and the name Petrozavodsk by the order of empress Catherine ІІ in 1777.

There are a lot of beautiful places to visit in Petrozavodsk. The architecture is very old and remarkable. For example: State University, National Drama Theatre, Republican Center of Arts.

Petrozavodsk is a beautiful city with parks and green streets on the Bay of the Lake Onega. The population of Petrozavodsk is about three hundred thousand people. The national language is Russian.

Petrozavodsk is a port of five seas. It is situated just in the middle between Murmansk and Moscow, 1000 km. to both sides. The climate in Karelia is very different in different regions.
