“Live not to eat, but eat to live”.
Teacher: As you know, people from around the world eat different kinds of food and they have different tastes. And there is a nice proverb to begin our lesson
“What is American food?” While you’ll hear the unenlightened decree with disdain that the United States has no food culture, the answer is far more nuanced.
Like jazz and blues music, some argue that barbecue is a unique American cultural food product, one that loudly communicates a multiethnic history and both local and regional identity.

American Food
What is “American” food?
The answer is that it is part Italian, part British, part German, part Mexican, part Chinese… When people from other countries came to live in the US, they brought different cooking traditions. Some of them opened restaurants. Today Americans enjoy food from all over the world.
Over the years some foreign dishes changed a little. Doughnuts were originally from Holland. In 1847 a young American boy told his mother that her doughnuts were never cooked in the middle. He cut out the centre and his mother cooked them — and they were very tasty!
Maybe the US is most famous for “fast foods”. The first fast food restaurants served hamburgers, but now they serve other kinds of food too. Inside there is often a “salad bar”, where you can help yourself to as much salad as you want.
Americans eat a lot, and when they go to a restaurant, they don’t expect to be hungry afterwards. Most restaurants will put a lot of food on your plate — sometimes it can be too much. But if you can’t finish it all, don’t worry: they will give you a “doggy bag” and you can take it home.
Most Americans now have a light breakfast instead of the traditional eggs, bacon, toast, orange juice and coffee. But on weekends there is more time, and a large late breakfast or early lunch is often eaten with family or friends.

Americans favorite dishes are hamburgers, hot dogs and cornflakes. Americans are fond of fast food. It’s typical for Americans to have much fresh vegetables with dressings, a lot of different fruits and fruit juices, and much ice-cream for dessert. Americans prefer to have dinner out. Their favorite kind of restaurant is so – called “King’s table”. Here they can take as much food as they want for a special payment. These restaurants are very popular all over America because they are cheap, but the meal is very delicious there. But when it is a holiday, Americans prefer to gather at home. Celebrating, for example the Thanksgiving Day every family has a Thanksgiving apple – pie or pumpkin pie, and turkey with dressing on the table.
But ever if English and American people all have different ideas about substantial meal, they all have to face an eternal problem of money. And whether they, in fact, get such a meal depends on their housekeeping budget.

I want to tell you about American meals.
Typical American meals are barbecue, grilled vegetables, and ribs.
A very popular beverage is lemon tea. In the morning Americans have a bowl of cereal, bacon, egg, toast with jelly and a bagel. The usual noontime meal consists of something light and quick to eat.
It may be a hot dog or a hamburger. After work people often have dinner. It consists of milk, and some meat. Americans also enjoy carrots, peas, spinach, beets, tomatoes, and green beans. The meat could be chicken, turkey, beef, or pork. They seldom sit at the table and eat very long; they "eat and run". I dislike American meals, because it is not tasty.
