Capital of the USA

Washington, the capital of the USA, is situated on the Potomac River in the District of Columbia. The capital is named after (названа в честь) the first President of the USA - George Washington. Washington is not large city. It has a population (население) of 900 000 people. Washington has many historical places. The largest and tallest among the buildings is the Capitol. The White House is the President's residence. Not far from (недалеко от) the Capitol is the Washington Monument, which looks like (похож на) a very big pencil. The Jefferson Memorial was built in memory (был построен в память о) of the third President of the USA, Thomas Jefferson, who was also the author(автор) of the Declaration of Independence. The memorial is surrounded by cherry-trees. The Lincoln Memorial devoted to the memory of the 16th President of the USА, which gave freedom (дал свободу) to Negro slaves in America.
