Оборот there is/are

Предложения на русском языке, которые начинаются с обстоятельства места (В мире, На столе, На заднем плане), переводятся на английский язык при помощи оборота there is/are:

На полке много книг. – There are many books on the shelf.

Данный оборот используется, если речь идет о наличии/отсутствии чего-либо/кого-либо в определенном месте или в природе, мире:

В мире много экологических проблем. –There’re many ecological problems.

Если после оборота существительное исчисляемое в единственном числе, требуется неопределенный артикль a/an:

There is a pen on my desk. You can take it.

Если после оборота there несколько существительных, форма глагола to be (is, are) употребляется в соответствии с первым существительным, например:

In my handbag there’s a comb, a purse and keys.

In my handbag there are keys, a comb and a purse.

Для образования вопросительной формы предложений с оборотом There is (there are) в настоящем времени глагол to be в соответствующей форме ставится перед словом there:

Is there a table in the room? Are there any chairs in the room?

При постановке вопроса к подлежащему с оборотом There is (there are) употребляется вопросительное слово what, являющееся подлежащим предложения:

What is there in the room?

Отрицательная форма оборота There is (there are) образуется при помощи отрицательной частицы not, которая ставится непосредственно после глагола to be:

There isn’t a book in my bag. There aren’t any books on the table.

Для выражения отрицания употребляется также отрицательное местоимение no, которое стоит перед существительным и является определением к нему. Употребление no исключает употребление артикля: There is no book in the bag.

Если в общем вопросе с оборотом There is (there are) имеется any, то в кратком утвердительном ответе может употребляться some, а в кратком отрицательном ответе может для усиления употребляться слово any (если речь идет о вещах):

Is there any milk in the jug? – No, there isn’t any. / Yes, there is some.
