COBOL - programming language.
COBOL, COmmon Business Oriented
Language)-one of the oldest programming
languages (the first version was released in
1959), designed primarily for the
development of business applications.
The project Manager for the creation of
COBOL was Grace Hopper. Almost since its
inception the COBOL is an ANSI-
-standardized programming language.

Born in
9 December 1906
Object-oriented programming tools and
other modern language constructs have
been added to the 2002 language
standard in COBOl.
COBOL is usually criticized for verbosity and
cumbersome, because one of the goals of
the creators of the language was to bring
the design as close as possible to the
English language ), so it is widely known the
statement of Edsger W. Dijkstra "the use of
COBOL cripples the mind. His teaching,
therefore, must be regarded as a criminal
offense."

At the same time, COBOL had excellent tools
for its time to work with data structures and
files, became the first language in which the
data type "record" appeared, it provided him
with a long life in business applications, at
least in the United States.
By 1997, about 240 billion lines of code in
COBOL were actively used, about 90% of
financial transactions in the world and 75%
of commercial transactions were
processed by code in COBOL, the total
cost of the code used is 2 trillion dollars.
