Valentine’s Day

• Also know as Saint Valentine’s Day and the Feast of Saint Valentine
• Celebrated on February 14 th
• St. Valentine’s Day began as a church celebration of the early Christian saint, Valentinus in the year 249

Why do we celebrate St. Valentine?

• St. Valentinus was imprisoned for performing weddings for people who were forbidden to marry
• While in prison, he is said to have healed his jailers daughter
• Before his execution, he sent her a note saying “From your Valentine”
• By the 15 th century, people started celebrating the holiday by sending cards and candy
