A dead village in Dagestan - Gamsutl

Dagestan is a magical land. Majestic mountains, fascinating nature. It has its own special atmosphere. Gamsutl is a village where no one lives. It's a dead settlement. The last resident died in 2015. And since then, only the mountain wind has been a guest in the forgotten walls. This place has long been overgrown with many legends and legends. Despite the inaccessibility, tourists visit the village of Gamsutl every year.

Many call it the Caucasian Machu Picchu. The village is located very high in the mountains, on the very summit. You can't see it from below with the naked eye. The height of the settlement almost reaches 1.5 km above sea level. From afar, it resembles a colony of birds, rural houses are like swallows' nests.

The history of Gamsutl village goes back to ancient times. It is believed that it was founded by the Avar Khans. Translated from their language, Gamsutl means - the foot of the Khan's tower. Perhaps the head of the khanate lived on the very top of the mountain. The location is very convenient, as all the nearby lands are clearly visible from there. All the enemy's troops are there at a glance, which makes him practically invulnerable.

There was a dense forest around the settlement, which was rich in all kinds of animals. With such a successful "neighborhood", the residents of Gamsutl could easily get food for themselves. And very close to the village there was a spring with the purest water. Many have heard legends about the miraculous power of this water.

They say that the icy water from this source not only never caused colds, but also helped to heal from many things. However, during the cholera epidemic, it did not save the inhabitants. As well as steep slopes and strategic location. Out of more than 3 thousand people, less than 40 remained alive.

Gamsutl was never conquered by any army. The Russian army failed without even trying to storm this fortification. Three religions have replaced each other in the village throughout history: Zoroastrianism, Christianity and Islam. An ancient tombstone was found on the territory of the village, the inscription on which they could not even read.

At the moment, visiting Gamsutl is unsafe, as the walls are gradually collapsing. But with the observance of safety standards, a trip there will bring a lot of positive emotions.
