On the first Monday in May, the British celebrate the May Day Holiday
May Day, also known as International Workers' Day, is celebrated annually on May 1 in many countries around the world. This holiday is dedicated to the international labor movement and the contribution that workers have made to the development of society, but it is not celebrated in England. However, this does not mean that the British remain completely without a holiday in May.
The first of May is a holiday in medieval and modern Europe in honor of the return of spring. This celebration originated in ancient agricultural rituals, and the Greeks and Romans organized similar festivals. Initially, such rituals were intended to ensure the fertility of crops and, consequently, livestock and people, but in most cases this meaning was gradually lost, so that these rituals have been preserved mainly as folk festivals.
Since the Puritans of New England considered the celebration of the First of May to be licentious and pagan, they banned its celebration, and the holiday never became an important part of American culture. In the 20th century, the traditional celebration of May Day in many countries declined, as May 1 became associated with an international holiday in honor of workers and the labor movement.
The most popular May Day traditions in the UK:
Coronation of the May Queen
Maypole Dance
Jack-in-the-Green

Coronation of the May Queen
In some parts of the UK, a young girl is chosen for the role of the May queen, who is crowned with a flower wreath. Then she can lead a procession through the city or village, accompanied by musicians and other performers. In the Middle Ages, girls washed their faces with dew on this day, believing that this would make them irresistible for the next year.
Jack-in-the-Green
Jack-in-the-Green, also known as Jack o' Green. It includes a pyramidal or conical wicker or wooden frame decorated with foliage, which a person carries in a procession, often accompanied by musicians. The tradition of "Jack in green" originated in England in the eighteenth century. This came from an older May Day tradition, first recorded in the seventeenth century, when milkmaids carried buckets of milk decorated with flowers and other objects as part of a procession.
