The first buses appeared on the streets of London in 1829. They were, of course, harnessed by horses and were called « omnibuses ». To increase their efficiency omnibuses began to offer two classes of service : a comfortable first for wealthier citizens and an open second for ordinary people. So there prototypes of modern double-deckers.

The most famous double-Decker bus was and still is, of course, Routemaster (from English can be translated as the owner of roads). It was created in 1954 and appeared on the streets of the capital in February 1956 as part of a plan to replace trolleybuses. Almost immediately, Rutmaster became an ultra-popular symbol of London.
