Russia’s wonders of nature

Many years ago Elbrus was a volcano, and now it is the highest extinct volcano of a planet. Its height is more than 5600 meters.

Elbrus is situated on border of Kabardino-Balkaria and Karachay-Cherkessia. Its top is visible from all points of Stavropol region. Interest to Elbrus is explained also by that waters of its glaciers feed the biggest rivers of Caucasus — the beauty Kuban and rough Terek.

The history of Elbrus is very rich. And it isn't surprising that during this time it acquired a lot of myths and legends. Here is one of them.

Жили в незапамятные времена два богатыря Казбек и Эльбрус, отец и сын. Полюбили они оба нежную красавицу по имени Машук. И никто из них не хотел уступать. Девушка тоже не решалась сделать выбор – настолько были хороши богатыри. Соперничали отец и сын, соперничали, а потом... Закончилось все смертельным поединком. Долго бились они, но одолел Эльбрус отца. Увидев бездыханное тело давшего ему жизнь, отцеубийца поседел. Отвернулся богатырь от прекрасной Машук, не захотел он любви ее, добытой такой ценой. И заколол он себя кинжалом, на котором еще не остыла кровь отца. Горько плакала над убитыми рыцарями красавица Машук: «Не было еще на земле таких богатырей. Как жить мне на белом свете, не видя вас?» Слушал бог эти стенания, слушал и превратил Эльбруса и Казбека в горы высокие, выше и краше которых нет больше на Кавказе. Прекрасная Машук тоже стала горой, но поменьше. Стоит теперь каменная Машук, смотрит и смотрит в ясную погоду изо дня в день, из века в век на исполинские вершины Эльбрус и Казбек. И не может насмотреться, не может решить, кто же из них милее её каменному сердцу.

The lake Baikal is one of the most ancient lakes of our planet and the deepest lake in the world. Its average depth is about 730 meters. In 1996 Baikal was entered in the list of the World heritage of UNESCO.

Baikal contains about 19% of world reserves of fresh water. Water in the lake is so transparent that you can see stones and various subjects at a depth of 40 m. Besides it is the purest and most transparent water in the world.

But today this great and pure lake is in danger. 20 years ago a pulp-and-paper factory was built on the shore of it. As a result, because of the water pollution more than 50% of the world’s purest water have been ruined. The ecological system has change a lot. Some organisms that can be found only in Baikal are disappearing, trees are dying from the dust and gas of the factory.

The valley of Geysers disappears in one of remote gorges on Kamchatka, it is possible to reach it only by helicopter. The valley is filled with streams of curling steam, a light smell of sulfur and a rain of multi-colored splashes.

We can only guess about original age of the Valley of geysers: it is clear, at least that it totals not one thousand years. However the nature managed "to hide" the masterpiece well: till 1941 anybody about Valley existence at all didn't suspect.

Since 50th years of the 20 th century after published the first detailed descriptions of the Valley of geysers, many tourists visited it.

In 2007 the valley was partially destroyed. On June 3, 2007 some powerful mud streams fell upon a valley, having covered its most part with dirt and stones, having blocked many sources.

The person who has been in the Valley of geysers for two days, can feel fatigue: this place is too beautiful and fantastic. But the one who visited the Valley once, wants to get there again and again because of its mystery.
