- the most beautiful city of the world - a UNESCO World Heritage Site - the youngest European city - the second largest city in Russia - Russia's cultural center - many tourists from different countries
Saint Petersburg
- Peter I (Peter the Great) was born on 30 May 1672
- He was one of the most outstanding tsars in Russian history
- He played a great part in Russian history
- Peter I travelled much in Western Europe and he carried Western customs and habits to Russia
- Peter completely changed the Russian government and military system
- Peter I founded Saint-Petersburg in 1703

Palace square
is the main square of Saint Petersburg
The Winter Palace, the General Staff Building with a triumphal arch and the Alexander Column are located there
The Hermitage is one of the world's largest museums
- was founded by Catherine the Great
- consists of 5 buildings

The Bronze Horseman is the statue of Peter the Great
- is located in the Senate Square - the statue was unveiled in 1782 - the horse tramples a serpent which symbolizes envy and hostile forces - the statue is balanced on three supports, the legs of the horse and a snake - a rock for pedestal was found near the city - it weighed about 1600 tons - transporting the rock took about 2 years
Saint Isaac Cathedral
- the largest cathedral in the world
- the cathedral was designed by the French architect August de Montferrand
- the construction of the cathedral took 40 years
- Its height is 101.5 metres
- each of the granite columns weighs 114 tones
- its capacity is 14,000 people
The Mariinsky Theatre
- one the most famous theatre in Russia - Mariinsky theatre was built from 1847 to 1848 by the architect Kavos - opened in 1860 - the theatre is named after Empress Maria Alexandrovna, wife of Tsar Alexander II - many of the stage masterpieces of Tchaikovsky, Mussorgsky and Rimsky- Korsakov received their premieres - both stages host ballet, opera and evenings of classical music
The Church of the Saviour on Spilled Blood
- is built on the site where in 1881 Emperor Alexander II was fatally wounded - built in the then-outmoded Russian style - contains more than 7,000 sq. m. of unique mosaics - operated as a church, but only very briefly - served as a morgue during WW2 - housed an unexploded German shell for nearly 20 years
The Peter and Paul Fortress
- сonstruction of the fortress started in 1703 - has never been used for military purposes - was used as a prison for political figures - in 1924 the fortress was converted to a museum - here are buried almost all the Russian emperors and empresses starting from Peter I and ending with Nicholas II and many members of the Imperial family
The city of bridges
68 rivers, channels and lades cross the city in different directions forming 42 islands on its territory
White nights Saint Petersburg is famous for its legendary beautiful white nights. The city attracts tourists from all over the world.
