The Earl of Derby asked Edward Lear to do some coloured paintings of the Earl’s collection of parrots.

As well as parrots, the Earl had a lot of grandchildren, and Edward Lear had to draw them too. To keep children amused he started writing his limericks. He drew a little sketch to go with each poem,

The Earl of Derby's grandchildren thought these were great fun and when "A Book of Nonsense" was published, so did everyone else.

Limerick writing became very popular and many great authors turned their hand to them.

Since the» people have never stopped writing limericks.

Rules for a Limerick

• 5 lines long

• Lines 1, 2 & 5 have 7-10 syllables and rhyme with each other

• Lines 3 & 4 have 5-7 syllables and rhyme with each other
