THE CHOICE OF THE TOPIC AND RELEVANCE OF MY PROJECT

• I chose this topic because I was interested in history of becoming English so popular and I wanted to know about advantages which gives studying English.

• My topic is relevant, because in our school, like in almost all schools in Russia, every student from 5-11 grades learns English as an additional language and it would be interesting to learn more about English.

My targets and goals

I want to know:

• How many people in the world speak English?
• In what countries English is the first language? The second language?
• In what spheres of life English is important and why?
• How difficult is English?
• How did English became the global language?
• How is the popularity of English changing now?

How many people speak English?

• With more than 350 million people around the world speaking English as a first language and more than 430 million speaking it as a second language, there are English speakers in most countries around the world. Why is English so popular, though? And why has it become a global language?

• English is the official language of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, of the United States of America, of Australia and New Zealand. It is used as one of the official languages in Canada, the Republic of South Africa and the Irish Republic.

The complexity of the English

• English language is not very difficult for studying. It hasn’t got any declinations like in Russian and all letters had taken from Latin alphabet. It attracts people who want to study English.

Start of becoming English as a global language

• By the end of the 16th century, the spelling of modern English was already established. English was the native language of only 6 million people, and unknown in other countries. However, this changed when England formed colonies around the world.

• Britain used to be a leading sea nation in the world. After Christopher Columbus had discovered America, British explorers, such as Francis Drake and Walter Raleigh, led expeditions to, for example, South America and the Caribbean.

English colonies

• The first successful English colony in America was Jamestown (Virginia) in 1607.

English as an international language in business

• People often call English the international language of business, and it’s increasingly true as international trade expands every year, bringing new countries into contact.

English as an international language in medicine and science

• If your ambitions lie in science or medicine, you can’t neglect English either.

English as an international language in education

• English also opens doors in the academic world. Of course, if the best program in your field is in an English-speaking country, English will give you the opportunity to study with the top scholars.

English as an international language in travelling

• If you want a career in travel, English is absolutely essential. As the international language of aviation, pilots and cabin crew all need to speak English. Even if you’re not up in the air, speaking English accurately will ensure you are able to communicate with clients and suppliers all over the world.

The increasing popularity of the English language

• Now the number of people who know English is growing very fast.

I interviewed my classmates about how important they consider learning English.

Here are the results of my survey:

As we saw, the majority of my classmates thinks, that learning English is very important. It confirms, that English language is very popular nowadays and a lot of people will connect their lives with it.
