JANUARY 25 is the birthday of Robert Burns, the greatest poet of Scotland   (1759 -1796)

Robert Burns was born in a clay – build cottage near the River Doon in Alloway, Ayrshire. Later, he remembered and used in his works the songs and stories he had heard in his little cottage home.

Robert Burns travelled much throughout Scotland collecting folk – tales and ballads. His work was inspired by pure patriotism and love for his people .  

Robert Burns wrote many poems in English, but his best verses were written in the dialect of his own country, Ayrshire. In this Scottish dialect he wrote all kinds of poems .

With tenderness, understanding, and simplicity, Robert Burns depicted the life he knew, and his poems touch the heart and soul of every reader. He wrote more than 500 poems and songs.

Jinn Armor – Robert’s wife. He married in 1788. There were nine children in their family .    

This is a room where Burns died when he was only 37 years of age. His early death was due to the fact that all his life he worked physically beyond his strength.    

  The monument to Robert Burns. He is the national poet of Scotland, and January 25 – the date of his birth – is celebrated by Scotchmen.
