• American Autumn is rich for the holidays. In November, millions of citizens and residents of the United States will celebrate their favorite , and the long-awaited family holiday (except Christmas Day) - Thanksgiving Day . In English is called Thanksgiving Day and is celebrated on the fourth Thursday of November. Most Americans take the same vacation on Friday to get a four day weekend , during which they can travel long distances to visit family and friends .

Thanksgiving - this is a special holiday for Americans, and that's why this is so , one can understand the lessons of American history. In this article , unfortunately , it is impossible to tell all the details of the historical record of more than 400 years ago. And once I can say that the official version of history, more than kind, joyful and happy , rather than what actually happened . The American Thanksgiving holiday began as the first years of the American colonies almost four hundred years ago.

In 1620 , a ship with over a hundred passengers on board crossed the Atlantic to stay in the New World. Pilgrims from England settled there in what is now Massachusetts. Their first winter in the New World has been very difficult. They arrived too late to grow sufficient number of grains was not fresh food and vitamins. Half the colony died from the disease in the first winter . Next spring, the locals, the Iroquois Indians , taught the colonists how to grow corn (maize), showed them other crops to grow , and as taught to hunt and fish .

This holiday is surrounded by many myths , many of which have a rebuttal .

In the following years many of the original colonists began to celebrate the harvest . George Washington suggested the date November 26 to celebrate Thanksgiving. Then, in 1863 , after a long and bloody civil war , Abraham Lincoln asked all Americans to celebrate the last Thursday in November as Thanksgiving Day . To this day , lunch on Thanksgiving Day is almost always includes dishes that are served at the first feast : roast turkey , cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie. Before the meal, pauses , and the prayer of gratitude or to thank for all , including for the joy together with the family . Thanksgiving became a national holiday tradition - and not just because so many Americans have found prosperity and wealth in this country, but also because the pilgrims sacrifice for their freedom still captivate the imagination .

Turkey , corn , pumpkin and pumpkin pie , as well as cranberry sauce - are symbols that represent the first dinner on Thanksgiving Day.
