Introduction. Find something you love to do and you’ll never have to work a day in your life. For many people a job is more than an income –it’s an important of who we are. So a career transition of any sort is one of the most unsettling experiences you can face in your life. Paul Clitheroe Choosing a career after finishing school is a tough task for most students in Russia and the UK. This problem is very urgent among the students, especially school leavers.   It goes without saying that knowledge of foreign languages plays a very important role in career prospects, even if you do not have to work abroad, a foreign language is still a requirement.

  • Choosing a career after finishing school is a tough task for most students in Russia and the UK. This problem is very urgent among the students, especially school leavers.
  • It goes without saying that knowledge of foreign languages plays a very important role in career prospects, even if you do not have to work abroad, a foreign language is still a requirement.
The problem of the research: How can students in the UK and in Russia choose the right career path? The hypothesis - if students follow the recommendations and tips, do career tests, quizzes and questionnaires, it will be useful for choosing the right career path The object of the research is choosing a career. The subject of the research is the ways how to find a rewarding career path.

The subject of the research is the ways how to find a rewarding career path.

The aim of the work is to study and analyze the literature on the problem to prove or disprove the hypothesis.  Learning objectives: 1. To study the definitions of “career” “profession”, “job”, “occupation”. 2. To work with different resources to find the information on the problem (books, articles, magazines and the Internet). 3. To study and compare the best paid graduate jobs in the UK and Russia. 4. To find out occupations associated with foreign languages. 5. To do a research of future career options among Russian teenagers. 6. To represent the results with the help of bar and pie charts. 7. To suggest some tips, tests and quizzes for students to choose the right career path.

What is a career?  According to the Collins English dictionary: Career is the series of jobs that a person has through his/her working life. Profession - is a type of work, such as medicine (being a doctor) or teaching that requires a high level of training or education. Job - 1.Occupation or paid employment 2. Task to be done 3.Performance of a task. Occupation and job have similar meanings. However, occupation is far less common than job and is used mainly in formal and official styles.

PART2. On the second stage the students of our school were asked to do Career Interest Questionnaire. The aim was to help identify career areas might be the best fit for students: Business, Management and Administration Finance Human Services Architecture and Construction Hospitality and Tourism Health Sciences Law, Public Safety, Corrections and Security

Then we asked the students to discuss the Pros and Cons of different professions in groups at the English lessons . The results are represented in the table. Pros The caring professions Cons (nurse, teacher, veterinary, doctor) The chance to meet lots of different people. The creative professions (journalist, designer, beautician, hairdresser) You are able to use your imagination. Your services are greatly appreciated. The office professions Salary is low. Money can be quite good; Good chance for promotion; (secretary, bank worker, receptionist) Great emotional involvement and responsibility. The forces The work is hard to get into. Immense job satisfaction; Varied work. Travel; (policeman, officer, firefighter) Can be glamorous occupation. Can transfer to other branches. It can also be unstable. Part 4. The Ranking Task. The next task was to put the universities in the ranked order according to the degree of importance for students. The list of the universities was the following: 1. Moscow State University 2. St. Petersburg State University 3. Moscow Medical Academy 4. Moscow State Linguistic University 5. Kaliningrad State Technical University 6. Immanuel Kant Baltic Federal University  7. The State University of Management 8. The Bonch-Bruevich St. Petersburg State University of Telecommunications  9. Finance Academy under the Government of the Russian Federation 10. ITMO University 11. Smolensk State Academy of Physical Culture, Sport and Tourism 12. The Moscow University of Finance and Law Regional Campuses in Kaliningrad

Conclusion  We have analyzed the best paid graduate jobs in the UK and Russia. Most of them were mentioned in the practical part. We have done and analyzed the research. Thus, our hypothesis was proved because career tests, quizzes and tips gave our students the idea of what career path suited them. Many of the students have already decided what career to choose and some of them are on the right path of choosing a career.
