The World Famous Art Galleries

The National Gallery

• The National Gallery houses one of the finest collections of masterpieces in the world. In 1824 the government bought the collection of pictures accumulated by John J. Anderstein. The specially built gallery in Trafalgar Square was opened in 1838. It was visited by newly crowned Queen Victoria. The main collection of more than 2,000 pictures is arranged chronologically. Italian painting includes works by Botticelly, Raphael, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Titian. Paintings of the Dutch and Flemish schools include the works by Rembrandt, Rubens and Van Dyck. The art collection includes works by Velasquez and Goya, Manes and Renoir. British paintings include selection from Hogarth to Turner. Admission is free.

The Hermitage

• The Hermitage in St.Petersburg is one of the most famous museums in the world. The museums foundation dates to 1764, when Katherine the Great received 225 West-European paintings as a debt from Berlin. The museum grew rapidly throughout the 18 th century and soon became one of the greatest art galleries.

• Today the Hermitage collection consists of some 3 million pieces which are exhibited in 353 rooms, occupying 5 buildings. All of them can be seen from the Neva river. The museum’s six departments boast works of art and culture, dating from ancient times to the present day.
• In the department of Russian culture you can see old Russian icons, portraits, water-colors, pencil drawings, objects of applied art, dating from early Slavic times to the second half of the 19 th century.
• The most famous of all the Hermitage departments is the department of West-European art, comprising a picture gallery and a collection of sculpture and decorative art. They date from the medieval era to the present day, including canvases of the greatest artists of Italy, Spain, Holland, France, Germany, England as well as sculptures, pencil-drawings, works of applied art.

The Tretyakov Gallery

• The state Tretyakov Gallery is one of the best –known art galleries in Russia. It takes its name from its founder Pavel Tretyakov, a Moscow merchant and lover of art. In 1856 he bought his first two paintings by Russian artists. This year is considered to be the date of the foundation of the gallery. Pavel Tretyakov dedicated 40 years of his life to the establishment of a national Art Museum. In1881 he opened his collection to the public. In1892 Pavel Tretyakov presented his collection to the city of Moscow. Since that time the Gallery has his name.

• The Tretyakov Gallery has a very rich collection of Russian art from the 12 th to the 20 th centuries. It has a rich collection of old Russian icons. The world famous icon “The Trinity” by Andrei Rublev is exhibited there. The gallery contains halls, devoted to the magnificent works of such famous Russian artists as Rokotov, Kiprensky, Bryulov, Ivanov,Tropinin, Venetsianov, Kramskoi, Savrasov, Perov, Repin, Surikov, Levitan, Serov, Vrubel and others. Here we can see historical paintings, portraits, landscapes, seascapes and a collection of Russian sculpture.

Ivan Aivazovsky Art Gallery

• In 1845-1848 Ivan Aivazovsky built a large house in Feodosiya according to his own project. A large studio adjoined the living rooms. In this studio the artist created the major and the better part of the 6,000 of his paintings.
• Thirty-five years later Aivazovsky built a large exhibition hall (art gallery) adjacent to the house. Its official opening coincided with the artist’s birthday on July, 29 1880.

• During the artist’s lifetime the collection of paintings on display at the art gallery was regularly changed as many paintings were sent to exhibitions in other countries and cities of Russia. They were then replaced by new ones.
• In 1990, after the death of Ivan Aivazovsky the art gallery became the property of the town in accordance with the artist’s wishes.
• At present, the collection of works by Aivazovsky consists of 416 paintings. It is arranged so as to illustrate the evolution of the 63-year-old creative development of the artist.
• Besides the unique collection of works by Ivan Aivazovsky at the art gallery one can see numerous paintings by his followers.
