Christmas is celebrated on the 25 th of December
Firstly it is a religious holiday. On this day we celebrate the birth of a holly child – Jesus Christ
The story goes that Mary and Joseph came to Bethlehem. But all the hotels were full and one poor man had sheltered them in his shed. So they needed to stay with sheep, donkeys and cows.
In this very place the Kings of Kings was born. The bright star above the city tells the people about his birth.
Three Kings from different countries comes to Bethlehem. They brought gifts to infant Jesus. From that time came a tradition to give presents to children on this day.
Now we still remember about the religious part of this holiday but it became more public
This holiday is one of the most popular with both children and adults
The celebration stars much earlier from the 1 st of December. On this day children start their Christmas calendar.
Four Sundays before Christmas people put the Christmas wreath on the table. There are four candles in it.
Another great tradition is to make Christmas markets (or fairs). There people can buy everything they need for the holiday or simply feel the spirit of it.
The 24 th of December is the Christmas Eve. Till this day people try to decorate the Christmas tree
Many years ago people use candles, paper figures, sweets and apples to decorate their Christmas trees. Now we use glass or plastic balls and figures.
Another tradition is to put stockings near fireplaces.
All children are waiting for Santa Clause, who comes to give them presents.
They write letters to him and ask about presents they want to get.
But only good children get presents, for bad children are given pieces of coal.
At night Santa comes to house on his magic sleigh with nine deer.
Deer are magic and can fly. Each one has a name
But there is one very special deer he has got a red nose that works like lighter. His name is Rudolph. He is the leader and lights the way in very stormy nights.
Christmas is a family holiday. There are some special traditions on this day.
People send special cards and exchange gifts with each other.
People like to sing Christmas song that are called CAROLS. Many of them are more than 200 years old. Among the most popular are: Jingle Bells, We Wish you Merry Christmas, Oh, Christmas Tree and others.
