Volunteer organization for the protection of turtles “Indian ocean”
Presentation by Ksenya Pervusheva, 10-6
Our organization helps turtles inhabiting in Indian ocean.
Volunteers are responsible for the monitoring nesting females and their nests. This work is usually carried out at night with groups of volunteers. There are also a number of volunteers devoted to day-time work. Among them are people who take care of sick turtles.
Our volunteers consist primarily of students, but high school pupils can also join the program.
More about turtles
The method of creating laying (кладка) is the same among all species of sea turtles.
Female looks for a suitable place on the beach and begins to rake the sand by hind legs until it forms a circular recess. In this hole, the female lays eggs and fills them with sand, making the laying as inconspicuous as possible. After that, the female returns to the ocean and doesn’t care about its children.
So, people must help small turtles.
Newborn unprotected turtles need to get to the ocean by themselves. Most of them are killed by predators.
Turtle nests are also often ruined by different animals and even by people.
We help to protect nests from this danger!
