Spike Milligan

Terence Alan "Spike" Milligan was a Irish –British comedian, writer, poet and actor. He was born in India, where spent his youth. His father is Irish and mother is British.

Childhood

Spike Milligan’s childhood spent in Indian Pune and then to Yangon.

In the late thirties and early forties, Milligan was a jazz vocalist amateur and played trumpet. Then called up for military service in the fight against Nazi Germany

Military career

At war he wrote and performed comedy sketches as part of concerts to entertain troops. He was wounded in at the Battle of Monte Cassino.

After hospitalisation, becoming a full-time entertainer

For a while he lived in Italy, where he played in the comedy trio «The Bill Hall Trio». Then he returned to England.

In 1969, Spike opened his sitcom «Curry & Chips», which ridiculed the racist attitudes in the UK. But after show was closed because of numerous complains.

Poetry and other writings

Milligan not only wrote the children’s poems and was the author of the novel «Puckoon» and series of memoirs.

Spike Milligan is the author of The Looney: An Irish Fantasy, The Murphy, Classic Adventures: According to Spike Milligan and other.

Composing

Spike Milligan is author of several comic songs. «Purple Aeroplane» is parody of the Beatles song «Yellow Submarine».
