Biography

Diana Frances Spencer  was born at Park House, Sandringham in Norfolk, England on 1 July 1961.

Her father, John Spencer, was Viscount Althorp , the representative branch of the same family Spencer-Churchill, as Duke of Marlborough and as Winston Churchill. Diana's ancestors on the paternal side were of royal origin. Earls Spencer lived in the heart of London, at Spencer-House.

Diana's childhood passed in  Sandringham, where she received primary education at home. Her teacher was governess Gertrude Allen, who had taught mother of Diana. She was educated at Riddlesworth Hall in Norfolk and at West Heath Girls' School.

When Diana was 8 years old, her parents divorced. She continued to live with her father, her sisters and brother. Divorce had a strong influence on the girl, and soon a stepmother appeared in the house, who disliked children.

In 1975, after the death of her grandfather, Diana’s father became the 8th Earl Spencer, and she gained the title of courtesy, "lady", intended for the daughters of senior peers. In this period, the family moved to the ancient castle Althorp House in Nottrogtonshirre.

In 12 years, the future princess was adopted to a privileged school for girls in West Hill, Sevenoaks, Kent, where she was regarded as an academically below-average student, having failed all of her O-level examinations.

In 1977, aged 16, she left West Heath and briefly attended Institute Alpin Videmanette, a finishing school in Rougemont, Switzerland. Diana was a talented amateur singer, excelled in sports and reportedly longed to be a ballerina. After she found herself in Switzerland, Diana soon began to feel homesick and returned to England ahead of schedule.

In winter of 1977, before leaving to continue her study, she met her future husband, Prince Charles for the first time, when he came to Althorp for hunting.

In 1978 she moved to London, where she stopped in the apartment of her the mother, who spent most of the time in Scotland. As a gift for the 18th anniversary Di got her own apartment of 100,000 pounds in Earl's Court, where she lived with three girlfriends. During this period, Diana was working as an assistant at the Young England kindergarten in Pimlico.

The prince proposed on 6 February 1981, and Lady Diana accepted, but their engagement was kept secret for the next few weeks.

The wedding took place at St Paul's Cathedral in London on Wednesday 29 July 1981 before 3,500 invited guests and an estimated 1 billion television viewers around the world.

The Prince and Princess of Wales had two children, Prince William of Wales on 21 June 1982 and Prince Henry of Wales (commonly called Prince Harry) on 15 September 1984.

In the mid 1980s her marriage fell apart. Both the Prince and Princess of Wales allegedly spoke to the press through friends, accusing each other of blame for the marriage's demise. Charles resumed his relationship with Camilla Parker Bowles (later, after the death of Diana, she became his second wife), while Diana became involved with riding-master James Hewitt. The Prince and Princess of Wales were separated on 9 December 1992; their divorce was finalised on 28 August 1996.

Shortly before his death, in June 1997, Diana began dating with producer Dodi al-Fayed, the son of Egyptian billionaire Mohamed Al Fayed, but this fact has not been confirmed any by any of her friends. This fact is also denied in the butler’s book of Lady Diana, whose name is Paul Burrell. He was a close friend of the princess.

Starting in the mid-to-late 1980s, the Princess of Wales became well known for her support of charity projects, and is credited with considerable influence for her campaigns against the use of landmines and helping the victims of AIDS. Princess Diana was one of the most popular women in the world of his time. She showed the world that people with AIDS deserve no isolation, but compassion and kindness. She was called the "queen of hearts" .

Visit to Moscow

In June 1995, the Princess made a brief visit to Moscow, where she visited a children’s hospital that she had previously supported through her charity work. Diana presented the hospital with medical equipment.

During her time in the Russian capital, she was awarded the international Leonardo prize, which is given to the most distinguished patrons and people in the arts, medicine and sports.

Death of Princess Diana

On 31 August 1997 Diana was involved in a car accident in the Pont de l'Alma road tunnel in Paris, along with her friend and lover Dodi Al-Fayed, and their driver Henri Paul. Fayed's bodyguard Trevor Rees-Jones is the only person who survived the wreckage. The death of the Princess has been widely blamed on reporters, that were reportedly hounding the Princess, and were following the vehicle at a high speed. Ever since the word paparazzi has been associated with the death of the Princess.

Diana’s coffin was taken to her family home, Althorp House, and buried on a small island in the middle of an ornamental lake, called The Oval, in the Pleasure Garden on the estate. It was on September 6, 1997.

The Princess was the most famous woman in the world, the pre-eminent female celebrity of her generation: a fashion icon, an image of feminine beauty, admired and emulated for her high-profile involvement in AIDS issues, and the international campaign against landmines.
