William Hogarth

• William Hogarth was born in 1697 in London. Hogarth’s father was a schoolmaster. From his childhood Hogarth showed a talent for drawing. Later he studied to draw at the art school of Sir James Thornhill. And later Hogarth married Thornhill’s daughter.
• William Hogarth was a great English painter and an outstanding engraver of 18 th century. He made his name as an artist that painted “conversation pieces”. These little pictures were very popular in England during the 18 th century. They represent members of the same family or close friends that have tea, play cards or simply talk to one another. Hogarth said that his pictures were his stage, men and women were his players.

Hogarth’s pictures

• Hogarth painted moral drama of life in a series of pictures. His first successful moral series was “The Harlot’s Progress”. It showed a country girl in London. William Hogarth also made engravings. The most famous masterpiece describes a marriage between the daughter of a rich man and a young lord. The moral of this series is: don’t listen to different counselors; don’t marry a man for his rank; don’t marry a woman for her money; don’t visit auctions unknown to your husband; don’t have bad friends. Otherwise you will be ruined.

• Hogarth’s fame is based on these “moral” engravings and pictures. They are full of humour, though his portrayals show human weakness. You must read them. You must not look at them as you look at other works of art.
• I think the pictures teach us because they have very deep sense. William Hogarth was a very talented man. His portraits show us harmony in colour and excellent composition. The portraits of his sister, Mary Hogarth, and English actors are also well-known.

William Turner

• William Turner isn’t less famous than William Hogarth. He was born in 1775. He was the most traditional artist of his century. And he was the most original artist at the same time. He was devoted to the Old Masters and he created a new style. Sometimes they say that he prepared the way for the Impressionists. William Turner is famous with his amazing sea views. Turner’s greatest pictures are “The snow storm” and “Rain, steam and speed.

• Painting has always been a very important part of art in Britain. There are a lot of museums and art galleries in London. They are full of masterpieces, the works of great artists. But you can also find modern collections in British museums.
