The role of the English language in the modern world
The role of the English language in the modern world is invaluable. It is considered the most commonly used language. English belongs to the group of Germanic languages of the Indo-European language family. The number of people (native speakers) for whom English is native language is about 600 million people. The number of people who speak English is more than 1.5 billion. human. It is considered in demand in many countries of the world. Knowledge of the vocabulary and grammar of this language is extremely necessary in order to study abroad. Those who want to find a prestigious and well-paid job cannot do without it.
During the scientific and practical conference of students in 2022, the following data were mentioned:
• English is studied by almost 300 million Chinese (comparable to the population of the United States);
• In Japan, secondary school students have been learning English for 6 years;
• In France, secondary school students are required to study foreign languages (German or English to choose from). Almost 85% of students prefer learning English;
• In 90 countries of the world, English is the second official language, or is widely studied.
• In Sweden, Norway and Denmark, English is compulsory to study.
And another interesting fact is the benefit of the relevance of the English language in the modern world. Among all European countries, excluding Great Britain and Ireland, the Netherlands ranks first in terms of the number of people who speak English perfectly. In Portugal, students are offered a choice of learning English or French, and more and more students are choosing the former.
Areas and directions in the world in which English is the only language for communication:
1.The world of Science — scientific conferences and discussion of global world problems, exchange of experience and important scientific information, writing scientific papers and papers;
2.Sports sphere — all international sports competitions (Olympic Games, international starts, championships);
3.Travel — it is impossible to know the languages of all countries and peoples, but it is enough to know English to travel around the world without problems and communicate with representatives of other nations;
4.Getting a job — knowledge of English will help you get the desired position in a large foreign company in any country faster and easier;
5.Education — getting a prestigious education in the best educational institutions in Europe and America.
6.The field of cinema and literature — English makes it easier to watch movies and read classical literature in the original.
The methods of learning English with movies
Why is learning a language from films not only interesting, but also very useful?
When learning English, we often have to deal with grammar exercises, reading texts, and performing various written exercises. It really takes a lot of attention, energy, and, let's say, sometimes nerves. And this is not the most interesting activity, to be honest.
Therefore, watching your favorite movies or TV shows is a pleasant contrast that will make your classes not only more interesting, but also productive. And since our main task is to learn to perceive foreign speech by ear, it is very important to regularly hear native speakers.
Watching authentic TV series - what could be more useful and entertaining? By the way, it is in films and TV series that you can hear a huge variety of colloquial vocabulary - phrasal verbs, idioms and even slang, all that modern English that escapes the classical curriculum. It is recommended to learn English from films only if your level is at least Pre-intermediate.
From the Intermediate level, try to turn them off. Refer to the subtitles only while parsing the video. To begin with, I will highlight the common feature of all methods. In all cases, you need to go through three points, stages:
The video is divided into several parts, several minutes each.
Translate absolutely all words and phrases and it is advisable to write them out in a notebook.
Make sentences with the same words and phrases.
The first method is serial.
First, let's choose what to watch.
This method recommends choosing TV series, because, firstly, they consist of episodes that can last 15-20 minutes. Watching such short fragments will definitely not tire you. Secondly, the same actors are involved in the series. Each of them has its own intonation, pronunciation, and manner of conversation. And they often use the same phrases, or similar ones. Accordingly, each new episode will not cause you to challenge "Try to understand me?", you will quickly get used to the characters' speech and you will only have to learn words and phrases unfamiliar to you. One such example is the wonderful «Friends» series, the episodes are short, the characters have long been loved and familiar.
For those who still find it difficult to start with TV series, you can safely take cartoons. There are simpler words in them, and lighter and shorter sentences.Break the film into scenes for yourself, write out all the words unfamiliar from the scene, try to watch the scene first by peeking into the translation of the words, and then repeat these words to yourself, well, proceed to the next scene. Next time, review the series, only less often peek into the translation of words, and try to remember their meaning more.
By the way, it would not be superfluous to write out not only words, but also idioms and sentences, and slang as they can carry a different meaning, unlike direct translation. This way you will immediately learn both the word and its application in sentences, as well as interesting idioms and phrases.
Here is a small life hack for you, instead of just writing out, you can find the script of the series with replicas of all the characters on the web, download it and print it out. And then everything is the same, only over unfamiliar words and phrases you can add a translation, emphasize idioms in one color, and slang in another. In general, give a flight of your imagination.
The second method is learning from the context.
At first, you just watch the entire episode or the entire movie with English subtitles. You get acquainted with the plot, listen to the pronunciation, catch the intonation, in a word, get into the spirit of the filmed work. Don't bother if you suddenly hear an unfamiliar word. You'll figure out the new vocabulary later.
Next, try to review the film already carefully looking at the new vocabulary. And do not rush to immediately look for the translation of each word or phrase, try to figure out for yourself what this word means based on the context, and the context is not only words, but also visual. After all, with each sentence of the character, some action takes place on the screen, and there is also intonation and a visual image, which will only help to build the right associative image.
This way it will be easier for you to memorize new words and phrases, understanding their meanings, vividly presenting their image. And when you are sure that you have understood the meaning, you can check yourself by finding the translation of words and phrases.
For example:
The main character of the series “The Big Bang Theory” Sheldon in one of the episodes uses the phrase "I'm not comfortable with the new scent.”, it will be strange to translate as “I'm not comfortable with the new scent”, respectively, we can assume that the verb “to be comfortable with” can be translated as “I don't like”. That is, “I don't like the new fragrance...” It is clear and easy, and also did not have to go into the dictionary.
And do not forget, you do not need to watch the whole movie or TV series without stopping, you can also break everything into scenes as you like, only the principle of studying and understanding words will be different.
The last thing: do not forget to praise yourself and treat yourself to a delicious treat. Yes, you did it! We watched the whole movie and remembered a lot of interesting phrases and words!
The third method is Shadowing
The point is to repeat the speech repeatedly after the actor. The Shadowing method helps to improve pronunciation and memorize complex grammatical constructions. Repeat after the actor not only the phrases themselves, but also copy all intonation features. At the same time, we repeat not once, but several times, 3-7 times, until we remember the basic phrases and grammatical constructions.
Why is this a good method?
Firstly, this way you will definitely improve your speech and pronunciation, because you will have a good example and it will be easier for you to understand which intonation to keep.
And secondly, even if you don't memorize all the grammatical constructions, certain basic sentences will remain in your head. You can easily remember the questions and some answers.
Many people, after all, when they learned the phrase “What is your name?” they did not know which part of the sentence was responsible for what, but simply understood the translation.
The key advantages of the method of learning English by watching movies / TV series
1) The student gets acquainted with the spoken language, which in practice is more useful than the literary one. It is no secret that the texts of books and textbooks are often slightly divorced from reality – they often simulate situations that in reality can happen with a scanty degree of probability. At the same time, films, in most cases, use simple colloquial speech and even slang, which is used in dialogues constantly on a daily basis;
2) Watching a video sequence helps to complement speech with an audiovisual context, because thanks to facial expressions, gestures, intonation, word memorization improves. Again, a plus – even if you don't understand very well what the dialogue is about, you can guess the context of what is happening through the emotions and facial expressions of the actors, and this significantly improves the perception of foreign speech;
3) If you are watching your favorite movie or TV series, you will most likely get aesthetic pleasure, because although the technique requires effort, it is quite pleasant in itself, especially if you have watched this work of cinema hundreds of times;
4) You do not need to spend your money, however, you will still waste your time, whether it is wasted or not - only time will tell.
6 tips for those who want to learn English from TV series and movies.
Do not try to learn the language from TV series and movies with no knowledge. Without basic knowledge of grammar and a basic stock of foreign words, it is hardly worth getting acquainted with the language through works of fiction. You simply will not be able to isolate the necessary constructions and individual words from the speech you have heard and systematize them without knowing by what rules all these elements interact with each other.
Start with structured learning materials: classes with a teacher, textbooks, courses.
They explain methodically, step by step, how the language works and form an idea of its features. Study several textbooks or courses, consolidate the rules and vocabulary learned with their help with exercises, and then continue to learn the most commonly used and useful words. Separately, memorize common idioms, phrasal verbs and other constructions.
Once you have acquired basic knowledge of the language, start learning it through TV series and movies.
Choose videos that are interesting to you and correspond to your current level of language proficiency
Approach the selection of TV series and films sequentially: start with works with a simple set of words and gradually increase the complexity. If you don't understand the meaning of most of the lines, then this video is not for you yet. Look for something simpler, and then come back to the difficult one. To begin with, children's films and animation are well suited. When you have a desire to review your favorite movie, then do it in English. If you already know the plot, it will be much easier to perceive the foreign language version.
Also consider the pronunciation and cultural environment reflected in the film. If you focus on American English, watch pictures from the USA, prefer British — choose something shot in England. When you feel confident in one of the language options, fill in the gaps in the knowledge of the other.
Also, learn from TV series and movies that you really like. This approach will increase your motivation and involvement in the educational process and have a positive impact on the results.
Use subtitles correctly
Start with double subtitles. If you are not aware, you can simultaneously output two text streams in different languages for one video. So, by choosing English and your native language, you can always compare the literary translation and the original text of the lines when you do not understand the pronunciation of the actors or hear unfamiliar words.
As you progress in learning the language, try to make do with English subtitles more and more often.
Include translation in extreme cases when you cannot guess the meaning even from the context. This is the only way, apart from your native language, you will be able to get into English as much as possible. When you reach a high level, turn off all subtitles. Contact them only if absolutely necessary. This tactic will help to improve the perception of speech by ear.
Don't be lazy to come back and sort out the difficult moments.
Rewind and review scenes that you can't understand the first time. Listen to the speech again to catch the subtleties of pronunciation. If this greatly spoils the viewing pleasure, record the time of the attention-seeking moments and return to them after the end of the video. Or use the video bookmarks feature for this. You can also slow down speech that is too fast by slightly adjusting the playback speed.
Write down and repeat new phrases and words regularly.
Purposefully study unfamiliar words, and not just passively pass through videos with or without subtitles. Otherwise, the rate of vocabulary replenishment will remain extremely low, even if you start watching a movie a day. Write out new words and constructions heard in movies, learn them and repeat them regularly.
Review already disassembled movies and TV series.
Movies that you have already disassembled once can be reviewed in English without subtitles after a while. Thus, you will refresh the words and expressions you have already passed, get maximum pleasure by watching the movie non-stop. Compare how much more you understand now that you already know words that were previously unknown.
Types of tasks
Preview
Tasks in which a person can underline some facts that are correct in his opinion. After watching check, whether the person answered correctly, and correct the answer if it is incorrect. This way you can immediately draw a person's attention to certain points, and the concentration of the person increases.
While watching
Dialogues can be included in these tasks. While listening, a person will fill the missing gaps. Also, there can be tasks in which the viewer must pay attention to details (clothes, equipment, the weather) and choose the right one from the suggested options.
After watching
“True or false” may be added to the list of exercises. There can also be tasks in which the highlighted words in a sentence must be replaced with synonyms from the reviewed material (phrasal verbs and idioms).
The selection of films for study should be based on age, censorship and level of English knowledge. It means that a child with an A1 English level should not watch a movie aimed at an adult audience with a C1 level.

CONCLUSION
Summing up the results regarding the role, importance and relevance of the English language in the modern world, it is worth noting the following. Knowledge of the international language allows you to get more valuable information. Knowledge of the language will allow you to eliminate the distortion that may be present in the translation.
In the modern world, ignorance of English literally cuts you off from many of the achievements of civilization, since most of the information on the Internet is in English. The international language allows you to get a decent education at the university you dream of going to, a job you like and full-fledged communication with people from all over the world.
While learning English through films you will guess the meaning of some words from the context. This will teach you to feel the language, while you will see when and how the characters of the film use expressions, so you can easily remember in which situations it is appropriate to use one or another expression.
In films, they talk the way ordinary native speakers do, they can use slang, abbreviated forms of words and the like, so to learn to understand the British or Americans in real life, be sure to practice watching movies and TV series in English.
During the research, I concluded that students really want to learn English. That is very wonderful, because knowing English is important not only to travel around the world, but also to find the job where you will be able to work more productively.
