The Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race
The Oxford and Cambridge Boat Race - boat regatta on the Thames between the teams boat clubs in Oxford and Cambridge universities. This competition is the oldest and prestigious in the world of rowing. The first took place on 10 June 1829 at the initiative of the student of Cambridge Charles Merivelja(Меривелья) and student of Oxford Charles Uordsuorta(Уордсуорта) . Since 1856 the regatta was held annually, except for a few years during the world wars.
The regatta is traditionally held on the last Saturday of March or the first Saturday of April. Race distance is 4 miles 374 yards (6779 meters). Start - near a bridge Putney finish - Chlswick bridge the race takes place upstream.
Teams compete at the swinging eight vases rowers and one helmsman. Time of the race in the last few decades is 16-20 minutes (record in 1998 year Cambridge crew is 16 minutes 19 seconds). The Cambridge team goes on to start in the blue suits, Oxford is in dark blue.
On age, weight and gender restrictions is gone. Therefore the rowers are men, mostly heavy, during a race each of them makes about 600 strokes.
The Steering, on the contrary, should be easier, and with the 1981 year there were cases when they become a woman. And in 1989 year steering of both teams were girls. In competitions can be both British and foreign students of the two universities.
The event attracts tens of thousands of fans who gather on both banks of the Riveralong the route of the race (2010, 2011 order attended 250 thousand people) and tv watching millions of viewers.
As at the year 2015, the winners of the race 81 times were representatives of Cambridge, 79 victories at Oxford, in the same race (in 1877) was ended in a draw. Cambridge leads in total number of victories continuously since 1930 year.
