Introduction
All people of the world have folklore - oral folk art Folklore is diverse. In medieval Europe, these are legends, fairy tales, ballads. In ancient Russia these are also fairy tales and bylinas. Folklore of each country has its own characteristics, but also much in common.
Content
The legend is a story about historical events and heroes. Legends were told often to music. The heroes of English legends are King Arthur, the defender of the poor Robin Hood, Knight Beowulf.
King Arthur is King of Britons. He made his capital Camelot and collected the most noble and bravest knights of the world. There were no quarrels among the knights concerning the seats at the royal table, the wizard Merlin presented Arthur the Round Table. Among the knights of Arthur we can see famous Sir Lancelot, and Sir Gawaine, and many others.
The King's sword Excalibur was forged by the elves of Lake Vatelin, and the Lady of Lake handed it to Arthur. He could kill with his sword only in the name of justice. Arthur died in the battle with his nephew Sir Mordred. The survived knights returned the sword to the Lady of Lake, and Arthur himself was taken by boat to the island Avalon. There the king is waiting for a day of great need, when he will rise from sleep to save Britain.
The legend of Beowulf was known among the Anglo-Saxon tribes long before their migration to the land of Britain. The story begins on the shores of the Baltic Sea and tells about the victory of the brave knight Beowulf, who saved Denmark from the terrible sea monster Grendel. Then he happily ruled in his homeland and died after defeating the fire-breathing dragon.
Robin Hood is the noble leader of the forest bandits. He acted with his gang in the Sherwood Forest near Nottingham. He robbed the rich and gave the loot to the poor. According to the most popular version, Robin Hood lived in the 12th century at the time of Richard the Lion heart and his brother John the Landless. The homeland of Robin Hood is village Loxley. All his friends are excellent archers, brave, noble people. Robin Hood’s helpers are Little John, monk Tuck, Alan-a-Dale. The main enemies are Sheriff of Nottingham and Sir Guy of Gisborne.
Bylina is an epic song about heroic events or episodes of national history. The heroes of the Russian bylina are the Kiev’s heroes Ilya Muromets, Dobrynya Nikitich, Alyosha Popovich. The bogatyrs go to the service to Prince Vladimir Krasno Solnyshko. The enemies are Solovei Razboinik, Kalin Tsar, Idolishche Poganoi, Zmei Gorynych. There are also Novgorod epics. The heroes of these epics are merchants, princes, guslars and peasants. In these epics there are no battles, they tell about the daily life of people. The most famous Novgorod epic is "Sadko". It tells how the poor guslar got rich thanks to the play on his musical instrument and the help of the Sea King.
Conclusion
Common features of legends and epics:
- They tell about many historical events. For example, the conquest of Britain by the Anglo-Saxons, and then by the Normans. Or the Tatar-Mongol’s invasion to Russia.
- Historical heroes act in them. For example, King Richard the Lion heart or Prince Vladimir. They are important source of information about the life of people in their time. We meet descriptions of the territory, weather, living conditions, clothes.
- The language of legends and bylines is very colorful and rich. For example, the sea is called "way of whales" or "a platform of winds".
- Heroes are strong, brave, noble people. They love their country. They always come to help people who are in trouble.
The differences between legends and epics are the following:
- In English legends there is much more magic, and Russian epics are more realistic.
- They have their own national flavor. For example, different clothes, different weapons, different homes.
I’ve made up a practical part of my project. There are two parts. In the first part you can see three texts in English with different tasks. All the texts are about one of the most famous heroes of English ballads Robin Hood and they are suggested for the 5th grade. In the first task I suggest to read the text and to define some statements as True/False/Doesn’t say. In the second text I suggest to read it and to fill in the gaps with the phrases given below one of which is extra. In the third text I suggest to match the headings with the small parts of the text one of which is also extra. The second part of my practice presents two Russian bylinas about Ilya Muromets and Alyosha Popovich. The task is to give the main idea of the bylinas in English. For both parts of my project I apply the English-Russian glossary
