Good morning! Nice to see you. How are you getting on? Look at the blackboard and answer my question:

  • What will the topic of our lesson be?
  • What is the space (the Universe) for you?

Read the quotation about space.  Do you agree with it?

“We’d never have got a chance to go outside and look at the Earth if it hadn’t been for space exploration and NASA”

  • What does the expression “ space exploration” mean?

In 1930, without leaving his job, he graduated from Moscow Bauman Higher Technical School and finished a flying school in Zhitomir. He devoted himself to developing of space-rocket engineering. He was an outstanding man, a scientist and the chief constructor of the first Earth sputniks and spaceships.

B

He was born on September 17, 1857 in the village of Ishevskoe, Ryasan Province. At the age of ten he became almost totally deaf due to scarlet fever. He had to study at home and books became his friends. He became interested in mathematics and physics and, while still a teenager, began to speculate on space travel. At the age of 16 he went to Moscow. He made an ear trumpet himself and attended lectures and studied in libraries. He passed the teachers examination and began to work as a mathematics teacher at school in Borovsk, about 100 km from Moscow. There he began his teaching career. Then he came to Kaluga where he wrote and published his theories of space flight and inter-planetary travels. He was among the first to work out the theoretical problems of rocket travel in space.

C

She was born on August 8, 1948 in Moscow. She showed a great interest for aviation at an early age. She earned an engineering degree from Moscow Aviation Institute in 1972. She set 18 international world records on MiG aircraft and three records in team parachute jumping. She won first place at the 6th World Aerobatic Championship in 1970. She was the world's first woman to fly twice in space and to make a spacewalk on July 25, 1984. She was outside the space station for 3 hours 35 minutes.

D

He was born on March 9, 1934 in the village of Klushino, Smolensk region. In 1951 he finished a vocational school in Lyubertsy near Moscow. He attended an aeroclub and began to fly when he was a student of a technical secondary school in Saratov. In 1955 he entered a school for pilots. Then he became a pilot and joined the first group of cosmonauts. In 1960 he began to prepare for the flight into space. On April 12, 1961 he flew into space and made one orbit round the Earth in his spaceship Vostok-1. It was the first time in history that the Russian spaceship with the man on board was in space.

E

He was born on May 30, 1934 near Kemerovo. He joined the Soviet air force in 1953. He completed his flight training in 1957 and served as a fighter pilot until 1959, when he was selected for cosmonaut training. On March 18, 1965 Voskhod-2 was launched into space with him and Pavel Belyayev aboard. During the second orbit he left the spaceship to make a space walk. It happened for the first time in the history of space exploration.

F

He was born on the 7th March, 1940 in the village of Berezkiny, Kirov region. He participated in three space flights: he spent 75 days on board space station Salut-6 in 1981: 169 days - on board space station Salut-7 and 10 days - on board orbital complex Soyuz-Mir-Qwant as a participant of the Soviet-Bulgarian team in 1988. Now he is the rector of the Moscow University of Geodesy, Cartography and Aerial Photography.

G

She was born on March 6, 1937. On June 16, 1963, she was launched in the spacecraft Vostok- 6, which completed 48 orbits in 71 hours. Valery Bykovsky was in space at the same time. He had been launched two days earlier in Vostok -5; they both landed on June 19.
