LESSON PLAN


Subject: English (А-21 group) Date: 06.03.2018

Theme of the lesson: Have you ever…?

Type of the lesson: combine

Form of the lesson: practicum

Aim (SMART-goal): at the end of the lesson all students will be able to use

grammar construction in their speech

Objectives (expected results):

- educational to organize communicative activity of students on mastering and fixing a grammatical theme Present Perfect Tense

- developmental to develop listening skills, grammatical skills, skills of speaking and students' memory

- educative to educate the interest in learning the language, the education of such a quality of personality as the ability to think positively, through the formation of a universal human value of “Inner Peace”

Methods and techniques of teaching: practical, discussion

Forms of work: individual, pair work, frontal, group work, work with interactive board

Equipment: interactive board, blackboard, books (The New Cambridge English Course – 2: student and practice books, English Grammar in Use), cards, dictionaries


PROCEDURE OF THE LESSON


I. Organization moment, greeting:

- Good morning students and our dear guests!

Let’s start our lesson with the positive mood. And dear teachers you can join as too. Stand up please.

While you are standing I offer you to look at each other, smile and say something good to your neighbour. Give a compliment or wish something.

I’ll start and show!

- I’m very glad to see all of you today! You look wonderful. I wish you, my dear students, to show yourself very good in our lesson! And for our honorable guests I wish to be patient and not to judge strictly!

- And now, it’s your turn. Ok, sit down.


II. Warming up

- Look here:

The past has already passed

The future has not yet come

Only the present is now with us…

It’s the gift for us.

Therefore it is called the Present.

- So, how do you think are these words right? Do you agree with them? Do we need to live here and now and not wait for something in the future and not look back to our past? (Short discussion with students)

If we live in the present we are happy! We are in harmony with ourselves.

- And first of all, let’s read a tongue-twister. What is it? Read it all together.


What is the difference between these two words ‘present and pre‘sent? (a noun and a verb).

Repeat it in a low voice several times. Who will be the fastest? Let’s find out that, who wants to read first? Who is our winner?




III. Theme of the lesson

- How do you think what are we are going to talk about?

Today we will talk mainly about the present, about some actions which we have ever or never done… about our experience and revise grammar rule on Present Perfect Tense and Past Simple.

I hope we will have a good time together!


IV. Main part of the lesson

1. Listening

- Open your books at page 44. Here you can see some questions. Look through them. Do you understand the meaning?

- How do we pronounce the word «карнавал»? (students’ answers) And what is the difference between these two sentences – have you ever been to Astana? and Have you ever been in Shchuchinsk? Which one is correct? Why do we use different prepositions here?

- Do you know? It is important to know where we are, when asking questions like this. We can ask “Have you ever been in Astana?” when we are in Astana now and just wondering if our companion has ever been in Astana before. And if we are not in Astana we use the preposition to – “Have you ever been to Astana?” Is it clear? Wonderful!

- And now, let’s listen to short texts which are the answers to these questions – your task is to match them. Which question goes with which answer. One question has two answers. You don’t need to understand everything the speakers are saying. The pictures in the book can help you to choose the right answer.

- Listen. (Students listen to the records, do notes) Do you need to listen once again?

- Let’s check your answers. (1 – c, 2 – f, 3 – a, b, 4 – b, 5 – e)

- You’re right. Excellent job! So which times do speakers use in all these answers and in questions in the book? Present Perfect and Past Simple.


2. Grammar (rule and explanation)

Let’s revise your knowledge about these two tenses. I prepare cards with main rules on these two times. One by one you should go to the blackboard and put them in the correct place.

We normally use

Present Perfect:

- to give new information or to announce a recent happening

- when we talk about a period of time that continues up to the present

- to say that we have never done something

Past Simple:

- to talk about actions or situations in the past

- with this words: yesterday, two years ago, in 1989, when I was a child

So we may say that

This time always has a connection with the present.

and This time tells us only about the past.


- Can you give your own examples to each of these tenses. (The teacher is writing one of them on the blackboard) I offer you two my examples. (The teacher explain the rule, using the examples in presentation, work with the interactive board)











- So, I hope you understand the difference between these two tenses. Let’s do exercise.

(Students do exercise on the interactive board – choose one of the variants – Present Perfect or Past Simple).

3. Work in pairs (Page 45, ex. 2)

We use Present Perfect when we ask if a person has done something in his life or hasn’t. Let’s ask each other some similar questions as in ex. two. Here you can see a question: Have you ever eaten snails? What are snails? (Улитки). So have you ever eaten snails? I’ve never eaten snails.

- Work in pairs and ask each other similar question. You can ask if your companion has done something unusual in his life, or has eaten something exotic or other kind of questions. Pay attention that when we answer this question we can use simple past tense, like in the example, when the time is definite and it’s in the past.

(Students work in the pairs, the teacher controls their work)


4. Individual work (ex. 3)

- I’ll give you one minute to think about something that you have done that not many people have done. Tell us something very interesting about your life.

(Students think about their answer, tell some facts about their lives)

- Oh, how interesting your lives are! As for me, I’ve written letters to famous people in the United Kingdom, to an actress and actors. And I’ve received the answers from them!


5. Communicative game

- And now let’s have some fun and play a communicative game – question-box. Your should write down at least two questions using constructions Have you ever … ?

Then we put them in the box. And you should choose one after another in the circles and answer on these questions.


6. Role play (ex. 6, 7, 8, work in groups, pair work, individual work)

- Role play – The journalist and his Victim… oh, no. The journalist and the famous person. Work in groups of four. Imagine that you’re journalists and should prepare for an interview. In groups you should prepare ten questions and all the members of the group should write them down on a piece of paper. Ask about someone’s life, interests, studies. You can see some examples in the book.

- You can use dictionaries and ask me if something unclear. I’ll give you 8 minutes for this task.

(Students work together in the groups)

- Interviewing.

- And now you should find a person from another group and ask all the questions from the list. You should note the answers.

- Return to your seats, select the information and write about your famous person. You do not need to write down the whole information, just six to eight sentences. Do not put name of your famous person on the list.

- Are you ready? Give your papers to me. I will read the information and you should guess about whom this information is. Who is described in each one.

(The teacher reads the papers, students guess)


7. Additional task (work in small groups)

Present Perfect and Past Simple. (Exercise from the book English Grammar in Use. Exercise on cards). Work in small groups.



V. Summing up of the lesson

- All good things end, and our lesson also comes to the end. Tell me please, what did we do? Which tense did we revise?

- Let’s try to do a cinquain. Do you know what it is? Have you ever done a cinquain in your life? Let’s do a cinquain to the word Present. It may be time, or a gift, or grammar category – Present Perfect).

(The teacher explains the rule of writing cinquains, then students do it, work in groups, and present their results).
