May Day

The first day of the month of May is known as May Day. It is the time of year when warmer weather begins and flowers and trees start to blossom. It is a time of love and romance. It is when people celebrate the coming of summer with lots of different customs that are expressions of joy and hope after a long winter. Traditional English May Day celebrations include Morris dancing, crowning a May Queen and dancing around a Maypole.

Guy Fawkes Day

At the beginning of the 17th century, England is a Protestant country. The King of England, James I, is a Protestant too, but a lot of English people are Catholics and they want a Catholic King. In 1605, Guy Fawkes and a group of Catholics decide to kill the King. They choose the 5th of November, the day the King go to the House of Lords to open Parliament.

The King’s chief minister discovers the plot. His soldiers find Guy Fawkes in a cellar with 36 barrels of gunpowder to blow up the King and all the Members of Parliament. The soldiers arrest Guy Fawkes and his friends and take them to the Tower of London. They are all executed

and Parliament make the 5th of November an official holiday.

Halloween

On October 31, Americans celebrate Halloween. Halloween means “holy” (hallow) “evening”

(een). This is the evening before the Christian holy day of All Saints Day. On All Saints Day, Christians remember the Saints but Halloween is even older than Christianity.

Before Christianity, people in Europe believed that on October 31 ghosts of dead people came back. To scare the ghosts, people dressed like devils and were very noisy. They also make big fires to keep the ghosts away. Later, people did not believe in ghosts, but they kept the day of Halloween for fun.

Immigrants came from Europe to America and brought with them the custom of Halloween.

Halloween has some strange symbol is the jack-o-lantern in the window. The jack-o-lantern is to scare the ghosts. People cut the pumpkin, throw away all of the inside, and cut a face in it. Then they put a candle inside in it. Jack-o-lantern is usually look scary too!

Thanksgiving

On the fourth Thursday in November, in houses around the United States, families get together for a feast or a large meal. Almost all families eat turkey and cranberry sauce for this meal, and have pumpkin pie for dessert. This feast is part of a very special day, the holiday of Thanksgiving.

In 1620 the Pilgrims made a difficult trip across the ocean from England. They landed in what is now Massachusetts. In England the Pilgrims had not been allowed to freely practice their religion. So they went to the New World in search of religious freedom.

The Pilgrims first winter was very hard. Almost half of the group died of cold, hunger and disease. But the Native Americans of Massachusetts taught the Pilgrims to plant corn, to hunt and to fish.

When the next fall came, the Pilgrims had plenty of food. They were thankful and had a feast to give thanks. They invited the Native Americans to join them. This was the first Thanksgiving.

St Valentine’s Day

The 14th of February is not a public holiday, but a special day for people in love. Boys send cards to their girlfriends, and girls send cards to their boyfriends. But often they don’t write their names in the cards. The name of a person sending the card is a secret that’s the tradition.

St Patrick’s Day

People celebrate this holiday on the 17th of March. St. Patrick’s Day is packed with parades, good luck charms, and all things green. The event started as a religious holiday, but over time it’s become a celebration of Irish culture.
