СООБЩЕНИЯ:
1)The first printers
l)Reading is and will be a part of our life. We can't imagine our life without books and reading. First we see them in our childhood when our parents read us books with pictures, rhymes and fairy tales. Later at school we start reading with the first ABC book. And the books are with us almost every day. But have you ever thought about the kind of books people used long ago? No one knows when writing first began, but we have found drawings ou the walls of caves which are at least 25000 years old. The invention of paper played a very important part in the development of books. Paper was invented in China in the second century. In the 11th century the art of papermaking reached Europe but no trace of printing was found in Europe until 1423. It is only in the last 500 years that books have been printed on paper. Before that time the only way of making books was to write them out by hand. But who was this man who invented printing? Do you know his name?
2)1 should say that he was a genius. His name will be famous in ages. It was Johann Gutenberg who invented printing, and printed the first book- so-called Gutenberg Bible in 1456. The knowledge of the methods of printing spread so quickly over the Continent of Europe that by the year 1487 nearly every country had started printing books.
William Caxton was the first English printer. He was born in Kent in 1422. In 1476 he brought his printing - press to London, Printing was something new at that time and most people thought that it was the work of the devil. Some of the people wanted to break his press. Caxlon printed his first book in 1477. it was the first book printed in the I English language The title of the book was "Sayings of the Philosophers".
The Russian pioneer cf printing was Ivan Fyodorov. He issued the first Russian printed book "Apostle" in Moscow in 1564.Up to that time there were only handwritten books in Russia.
Gutenburg, Caxton and Ivan Fyodorov began to print books in the 15th century, the same century Columbus discovered America. Columbus discovered a new world, but the printers opened new world of thoughts and knowledge that changed the lives of millions everywhere.
2)The biggest books in the world.
The Devil's Bible was the first biggest and heaviest book in
the world. Made at the beginning of the 13th century in a Bohemian monastery, it was one the wonderful works of art. In medieval times,
its uniqueness was even put on a par with the wonders of the world. . . Why, how and by whom the Devil's Bible was made has remained a mystery until this day. But legend says the book was written by a monk, who was walled up alive for breaking a code, and promised to
create the biggest manuscript in the world in just one night in return for
being free from punishment. But when he realised that he would not be
able to keep his promise, he asked the devil for help and his prayer
was answered. The devil, to which the monk sold his soul, helped him.
It is known that skin from some 160 donkeys was used to make the book. Written in Latin, it also includes mystical medical formulae to treat some diseases and solve unusual problems. The very end of the codex includes a list of the days on which Easter falls in the coming years.
One more unique book in the world is Klencker's atlas which is in the British Museum. This atlas is 350 years old The size of the atlas is impressive. It is 1.75m high and 1.9m wide. It takes six people to lift it and it has been recorded as the largest book in the world.lt was made by Holland map-makers in the 17th century and contains 100 maps, considered the greatest in the world.
Later in 1976 in Denver, the USA, "Superbook" appeared and established a new record. It has 300 pages and it is 2.7m high, 3m wide, the weight is 253 kilos.
In Russia we also have a giant book. It is "The biggest book for Babies" It has only 3 pages with 12 poems, but it is б meters high, 3 meters wide and weighs 490 kilos. The book was made in the open air in the year 2004.This book beat all the records.
3)The smallest books in the world.
Do you know that along with usual books which we use every day there are a lot of miniture books in the world. Toe first smallest book appeared in China 200 years ago. Since then more and more tiny books have been appearing every year. But only two books came into the Guiness book of records.
American scientists of Massachusetts institute set the first world record in 2001 with their tiny complete text of the New Testament. The book is actually a tablet that's five millimeters (0.196 inches) square.. Each letter in the text is the size of a red blood cell or a small bacterium. The words are so small that they have to be enlarged 600 times before they can be read with the naked eye The New Testament contains 180 568 words.
Later in the year 2002 a new record was set by Anatoli Konenko from Russia. He created the smallest book in the world "Chameleon by Chekhov. This book has the size 0.9 by 0.9 millimeters, not much larger than a grain of salt. Amazingly, this book has 30 pages and three color illustrations and Chekhov's portrait. The print cannot be read by the naked eye, you need a microscope. This record helped Russia to take the first place in the world in creating tiny books.
