WARM-UP
T: We live in a wonderful world of modern means of communication, and TV is one of them . It is difficult to imagine a modern society without television. Do you agree with me? (Yes,we do )
Television now plays an important role in our life. It is difficult to say if it is good or bad for us. It is clear, that television has advantages and disadvantages.
But are there more advantages than disadvantages? In the first place, television is an entertainment. But it is not only a convenient entertainment. For a family of three, four or five, for example, it is more convenient and less expensive to sit comfortably at home than to go out to find entertainment in other places. They don't have to pay for expensive seats at the theatre or cinema. They turn on the TV-set and can watch interesting films, concerts, football matches.
But some people think that it's bad to watch TV. Those who watch TV need do nothing. We are passive when we watch TV. Television shows us many interesting programmes. But again there is a disadvantage here: we watch TV every evening, and it begins to dominate our lives.
Imagine that the reporter of a musical TV programme for teenagers came to us to get more information about television. Answer her questions, please.
Reporter: Hello! My name is Lisa… I am a reporter of a musical TV programme for teens. I want to ask you some questions about your attitude to TV. I can use this information during our next programme and you will see it on Friday .
1.How often do you watch TV?
P1: Well, I watch TV from 3 to 4 hours a day
P2: Frankly speaking, I seldom watch TV
P3: To be honest I watch TV more than 5 hours a day
2. Can you say that you are a ‘couch potato’?
P1: Yes, I can . I’m a ‘couch potato’ . I watch TV in the comfort of my home when the weather is bad and people are inside anyway .
I like watching nature programmes, cartoons, thrillers and sports programmes all day long . It’s fun if you have nothing else to do
P2: I think that I’m a ‘couch potato’ too because watch TV, I forget about everything ( about helping parents , doing my homework)
P3. I’m not a ‘couch potato’ because I watch only my favourite programme. That’s why I don’t spend too much time watching TV

T: I think that TV is great! I am fond of it because television is really a wonderful invention. On the one hand it helps children to learn a lot about our world. On the other hand it prevents them from spending their free time in the fresh air .. So, today we are going to discuss a very interesting topic “The Role of Television in Our Life»

“I hate television. I hate it as much as peanuts. But I can’t stop eating peanuts.”
How do you understand this quotation?
P1: I can’t agree with it because to my mind TV entertains people
P2: If you don’t have anything interesting to do , then you waste your time watching TV programmes.
P3: I agree with it because some of us are ready to spend hours in front of the blue screens of TV sets.

-Limitless television watching is unhealthy for children.
-Many boys and girls watch television on Sunday afternoon, while outside activities would do them so much good
-It is difficult to choose what programme to watch as there is an abudance of TV channels.
