Christmas is a religious holiday . It’s celebrated on the 25-th of December.

• On this day British people celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ .
• This holiday means the beginning of the new year and the new life.

Christmas is the most popular holiday in Great Britain. People like to celebrate Christmas very much. It is a family holiday.

They decorate a beautiful Christmas tree with toys, colourful balls and lights. They decorate their homes, too.

People send greetings cards to their friends and buy many gifts.

They have a merry party and a holiday dinner. They wear funny costumes, sing songs, dance to music and play games.

It is the sign that shows people are waiting for Christ and they are very glad to meet Him.

One of Christmas traditions is singing carols.

Christmas carols are the joyful songs about Jesus Christ and His birth .

Рождественские песни – Christmas carols

Впервые прозвучали в Европе тысячи лет назад. Но это не были известные нам рождественские песни. Это были языческие песни (pagan songs), которые пелись вокруг каменных кругов во время празднования зимнего солнцестояния (Winter Solstice). День зимнего солнцестояния – самый короткий день в году, который обычно выпадает приблизительно на 22 декабря. Слово carol обозначает «танец» или «песня радости».

Песни радости были написаны и исполнялись во все времена года, но традиция их исполнения закрепилась и сохранилась лишь на Рождество.

Рождественские песни – особые песни, которые исполняются на Рождество. В них поется об Иисусе Христе и времени его рождения

Рождественские чулки (Christmas stockings) On Christmas Eve children hang colourful stockings so that Santa Claus could put presents into them: oranges, sweets, nuts. He comes at night and puts presents into the stockings and under the Christmas tree. In the morning children find their presents there.

Кто же не слышал об этой замечательной традиции? Данный обычай относится к той же Викторианской эпохе. Говорят, что Санта-Клаус (Santa Claus) как-то пролетал над домом и обронил пару золотых монет (golden coins). Они упали в дымоход (chimney/flue), прямо в носок, который сушился над камином. С тех самых пор в рождественскую ночь принято развешивать носки над камином (fireplace) или кроватью, надеясь, что туда что-то упадет. Рождество – праздник для всей семьи, но больше всего его ждут дети. Они развешивают яркие чулки над камином и ждут подарков.

Christmas is a family holiday and people celebrate it with their families.

English families gather to have Christmas dinner.

They eat traditional Christmas food: a roast turkey and a pudding .

This tradition appeared in England in 1843. People send Christmas cards to their relatives and friends and wish them a Merry Christmas.
