On the 1st of March, 1926, the village Torgovaya was transformed into the town of Salsk (with a population of about seven thousand inhabitants), while the village of Vorontsovo-Nikolaevskoe continued to be a rural settlement and district centre.
A kilometer from the Vorontsovka (to the South of it) there was a railway station Torgovaya then it began to grow rapidly in the village.
The most important event that changed the fate of the village and its environs, was padding through the Salsk steppe railway Tikhoretsk - Tsaritsyn (Volgograd). In 1899 the road was adopted in permanent operation.
In November 1941 in the city of Salsk were formed the 116th Don Cossack cavalry division.
Its commander was Colonel P. V. Stremoukhov — civil war hero, a veteran of the first cavalry army.
In the battles against the Nazi invaders the division made victorious way from the foothills of the Caucasus to the Austrian Alps.
Grateful citizens of Salsk on the eve of the 70th anniversary of the Soviet authorities erected this monument in memory of the heroes who defended freedom and independence of the Fatherland.
During the great Patriotic war, from 31 July 1942 to 22 January 1943, Salsk was occupied by Nazi troops.
The invaders had killed hundreds of civilians. .
On 21 January 1943 Salsk was liberated from Nazi invaders.
The invaders killed three thousand citizens and prisoners of war. The place of mass executions became the career of a brick factory, where punitive daily shot up to a hundred people.
The merger with the village of Vorontsovo - Nikolaevskoe increased the urban area, in the suburbs grew new neighborhoods, began the improvement of the Central streets. The city acquired a modern look.
In 1978 in Salsk was inaugurated picture gallery of V.K. Nechitailo. Famous Russian artist Vasily Kirillovich Nechitailo, a native of Salsk, gave his hometown his own collection of paintings, which became the basis of the gallery. Currently, the Museum has nearly 2000 units of the main Fund.
In the same year in Salsk appeared the first professional educational institution - Salsk machine tool-building technical school. Now it is Salsk industrial college and it is one of the best colleges of the Rostov region.
Salsk, from 1899 to 1918 — station, Torgovaya, from 1918 to 1920 — Markov, from 1920 to 1926 - the village Torgovaya. In 1930 year the town became the administrative center of the town of Salsk and Salsk district of Rostov region
